Thon Marial Maker (born February 25, 1997 in Wau , Sudan , now South Sudan ) is a South Sudanese- Australian basketball player who is currently under contract with the Detroit Pistons in the US professional league NBA .

career

Maker, like the two former NBA players Manute Bol and Luol Deng , comes from the Dinka people . He grew up during the South Sudanese War of Secession , when an uncle organized for him at the age of five, together with his younger brother and aunt, to travel to neighboring Uganda . Once there, the civil war refugees were granted entry to Australia , where they settled in Perth .

At the age of 14, Maker, who had primarily played soccer as a child , was discovered by Edward Smith, an ambitious and idiosyncratic basketball coach of African American descent. Smith had previously had a protégé in Ater Majok , whom he had introduced to a professional basketball career with a similar background as a Sudanese refugee. After losing control of Majok, Smith watched over Maker warily and brought Maker to the United States early in 2012 . Was visiting Maker first two high schools in Louisiana and by 2014 for two years the Carlisle School in Martinsville (Virginia) before another year at the Orangeville Prep School in Canada Orangeville (Ontario) spent after his mentor Smith at a nearby academy got a job. In February 2015, Maker announced that he would leave school at the end of the school year and was heavily courted by colleges in the United States, as players can only be selected in a draft of the most important professional league NBA one year after graduating and therefore at least one to typically four years in an NCAA Division I college . In the summer of 2015, he reversed this decision and postponed the end of his school days by one year to a regular end of 2016.

NBA

In April 2016, Maker surprised with the announcement that he wanted to register directly in the NBA Draft , which was no longer possible since a change in the regulations in 2005 right after leaving school. In fact, Maker and his advisors relied on the fact that Maker had already graduated from high school in 2015 and then only spent one more voluntary year at the Canadian school. Thus, Maker's mentor Edward Smith bypassed his college days, which had ended early and not very promising for his former protégé Ater Majok in conflicts. In fact, the NBA confirmed the "eligibility" ( German  suitability ) of Maker for the draft, which was then selected in the NBA Draft 2016 in tenth position by the Milwaukee Bucks, after another Australian had already been selected in first place with Ben Simmons .

In February 2019, Maker was transferred to the Detroit Pistons in a three-team trade.
