Don Chaney (born on 22. March 1946 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana is) a former basketball player and head coach in the NBA .

Life

As a college player, he went to the University of Houston . During the four years there, he and his team reached the semi-finals twice in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In the 1968 NBA draft , he was selected 12th from his future franchise . His greatest success as a player in the NBA he had as a rookie during the 68/69 season , in which he was with the Boston Celtics champion. He was able to repeat this in the 73/74 season . After 7 years with the Celtics, he moved to the American Basketball Association for the 75/76 season , where he played for the Spirits of St. Louis . After another engagement with the Los Angeles Lakers , he returned to the Celtics during the 77/78 season and ended his career as a player there after the 79/80 season . Chaney was characterized by his defensive strength, which is why he was elected four times in the NBA All-Defensive Team .

Several engagements as assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons , Atlanta Hawks and LA Clippers followed in the next few years . For the first time he was head coach during the 84/85 season with the Clippers, where he remained in this position until the 86/87 season without being able to reach the playoffs . From the 88/89 to 91/92 season he was head coach with the Houston Rockets . Here he managed to qualify for the playoffs in the first three years, but where the Rockets were always eliminated in the first round. In the 90/91 season he was awarded the NBA Coach of the Year Award . During the 93/94 and 94/95 seasons he was head coach for the Detroit Pistons. He then worked on the coaching staff of the New York Knicks . On December 10, 2001 he became head coach of the Knicks and remained so until the 2003/04 season without being able to advance into the playoffs with his team. This was the last station of his coaching career, which resulted in a total of 337 wins and 494 defeats.
