Michael Joseph "Mike" Dunleavy Sr. (born March 21, 1954 in Brooklyn , New York ) is a former American basketball player and current coach . He is the father of former NBA player Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Career

As a player

Dunleavy played in the NBA between 1976 and 1990 for the Philadelphia 76ers , Houston Rockets , San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks .

As a trainer

In 1990 he began his career as a head coach for various teams in the NBA. Until 1992 he was the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers . For four seasons each, from 1992 to 1996 and 1997 to 2001, he coached the Milwaukee Bucks and Portland Trail Blazers . In 1999 he received the NBA Coach of the Year Award as the trainer of the Blazers . Since 2003 he was engaged with the Los Angeles Clippers . There he resigned from his office in 2010.

His overall record as an NBA coach is 613–716 (as of 2020). His greatest success was the final participation with the Lakers in 1991, where they lost to the Chicago Bulls .

In 2016, Dunleavy took up a position as a coach at Tulane University . This is his first job as a college coach .
