Delmer William "Del" Harris (born June 18, 1937 in Plainfield , Indiana ) is an American basketball coach who last worked as a coach for the Texas Legends . In the 1994/95 season he received the NBA Coach of the Year Award .

Coaching career

Del Harris began coaching the team at Earlham College in Richmond , Indiana , before becoming an assistant coach to the Utah Stars in the American Basketball Association under head coach Tom Nissalke . In 1976, Harris Nissalke followed again as assistant coach to the Houston Rockets , which he was head coach from 1979 to 1983 . With the Rockets he reached the NBA Finals in 1981, which were lost to the Boston Celtics .

After his time in Houston, Don Nelson brought Harris to the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach . After Don Nelson left the Bucks, Harris became head coach and later general manager in Milwaukee.

In 1994 he became head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers , which he supervised until 1999. During this time he was also coach of the year.

After retiring from the Lakers, Harris worked as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks .

On July 3, 2008, it was announced that both Harris and former head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats Bernie Bickerstaff have signed contracts as assistant coaches for the Chicago Bulls to use their experience to support rookie coach Vinny Del Negro . After Del Negro was fired in 2010, Harris was also fired.

For the 2011/12 season Harris was the new head coach of the Texas Legends from the NBA Development League . For the 2012/13 season he was replaced by Eduardo Najera as head coach.
