Bernard Tyrone "Bernie" Bickerstaff (born February 11, 1944 in Benham , Kentucky ) is an American basketball coach who is currently an assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA .

Bickerstaff was an assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls, Portland Trailblazers, and Los Angeles Lakers. Also Executive Vice President of the Charlotte Bobcats , of which he was the first head coach and general manager.

He was still head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics , where he was even voted Coach of the Year in the 1986/87 season . He was also head coach of the Denver Nuggets and the Washington Bullets . As an assistant with the Bullets, he managed to retract his only NBA title in 1978.

On July 1, 2008, Bickerstaff was hired as assistant coach of the Chicago Bulls to support new coach Vinny Del Negro . Bickerstaff was employed by the Bulls until the summer of 2012, but was then fired along with Del Negro. Bickerstaff then received the offer to become assistant coach of the Portland Trail Blazers . In the summer of 2012 he left the Blazers again and switched to the Los Angeles Lakers . In November 2012, Bickerstaff was briefly interim head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers after head coach Mike Brown was released from his duties. After working together for a year, the two parties separated again. Since July 2013 he has been under contract as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In June 2014, Bickerstaff received the National Basketball Coaches Association's Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award .
