Vincent "Vinny" Joseph Del Negro (born August 9, 1966 in Springfield , Massachusetts ) is an American basketball coach and former player. Among other things, the Shooting Guard played for the San Antonio Spurs in the American professional basketball league NBA . From 2008 to 2010 he was the head coach of the Chicago Bulls . Until the summer of 2013, he worked as the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers .
Player career
Vinny Del Negro was in the NBA Draft in 1988 by the Sacramento Kings in the 29th spot drafted . After only two seasons he moved to Italy to Benetton Treviso .
In 1992 he went back to the NBA. He signed a free agent contract with the San Antonio Spurs , for which he played for six years.
In February 1999 he got a contract with the Milwaukee Bucks as a free agent , but in June 2000 they handed him over to the Golden State Warriors . But in January 2001 he was sent on. This time Vinny was traded to the Phoenix Suns .
The Suns gave Del Negro to the Los Angeles Clippers in mid-November 2001 . However, he never played for the Clippers.
In a total of 771 regular season games in the NBA, Del Negro averaged 9.1 points and 3.2 assists per game. He led the Spurs as the best free throw shooter in three seasons: 1992/93 (86.3%), 1995/96 (83.2%) and 1996/97 (86.8%). The 1995/96 season was the best of his NBA career. Del Negro averaged 14.5 points, 3.3 rebounds , 3.8 assists and 1.04 steals per game. In each of the 82 games he was in the starting lineup of the Spurs.
After Vinny Del Negro finished his basketball career, he worked as a radio commentator for the Phoenix Suns. In July 2006 he was appointed Director of Player Personnel by the Phoenix team . On August 28, 2007, he was promoted to Assistant General Manager by the Suns . The Chicago Bulls surprisingly announced on June 11 that they had signed Del Negro as their new head coach. After he had led the Bulls into the playoffs twice, but failed there in the first round, he was dismissed by them in early May 2010.
For the 2010/2011 season, Del Negro was introduced as the new head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers . With the Clippers, Del Negro reached the playoffs in both 2012 and 2013, but could not lead the team into the area of a title win as hoped. After the end of the 2012/2013 season, Del Negro was released as head coach of the Clippers.
