Dwight Harlan Powell (born July 20, 1991 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian basketball player who is under contract with the Dallas Mavericks in the US professional league NBA .
Career
High school and college
As a teenager, Powell played in his native Canada at the Earl Haig Secondary School in North York (Province Ontario ). At the age of 14 he went to the United States to continue his basketball education at the IMG Academy in Florida . From 2010 to 2014 he played at Stanford University in California .
NBA
He was automatically registered as a college senior for the 2014 NBA draft . He was selected in the second draft round in 45th place by the Charlotte Hornets and a short time later swapped with Brendan Haywood for Scotty Hopson to the Cleveland Cavaliers . In September 2014 Powell was sold to the Boston Celtics with other players for Keith Bogans . With the Celtics he completed only five season games and played most of the time with the Celtics farm team Maine Red Claws . In December 2014 he was transferred to the Dallas Mavericks in the course of a transfer with Rajon Rondo . Even with the Mavs, Powell was often sent to the D-League for the Texas Legends .
In his second NBA year Powell got more playing time and replaced Dirk Nowitzki . He came in 69 games on 5.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 14 minutes on average. In the 2018/19 season, Powell achieved a double-digit point value for the first time in his NBA time with 10.6 per encounter. In January 2020, Powell tore his Achilles tendon in his right foot. To make up for his months of absence, the Texans signed Willie Cauley-Stein .
National team
Powell has played for the Canadian national basketball team since 2015 . In the summer of 2015, Powell made his debut at the American Basketball Championship for Canada and won the bronze medal.
