Career

Career

Rondo grew up as one of four children of Amber Rondo. He had no contact with his father, who left the family when Rajon was just seven years old. To support her family, his mother worked on the third shift at the tobacco product manufacturer Philip Morris USA . Rajon Rondo initially played football until his mother directed him towards basketball, as she was afraid he would get injured playing football because of his rather small stature. Rajon began to take basketball seriously and played for the Louisville Eastern High School team, where he was able to record 27.9 points, 10 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game in his freshman year. In his sophomore year he moved to Oak Hill Academy, where he was able to break the school's record for most assists in a season. He also scored 55 points in a single game and 31 assists in another game. Rondo was invited to the McDonald's All-American Team in 2004 and scored 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the All-Star Game there. Rajon Rondo continued his basketball career at the University of Kentucky for two years , but never made it to the Final Four at the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship . However, he set an internal school record with 87 steals - the most steals in one season in the history of the university.

Boston Celtics (2006 to 2014)

Rondo Rajon (December 2011)

In 2006, Rondo was the first point guard in the 2006 NBA draft with the 21st pick from the Phoenix Suns and shortly thereafter exchanged with Brian Grant for a first-round pick at the Boston Celtics . On July 4, 2006, he officially signed his contract with the Celtics. In his first season, Rondo came off the bench and shared the game minutes on the field with Sebastian Telfairs and Delonte West . By the end of the season, however, he prevailed easily and started a total of 25 games. Since he didn't have a very good jump shot, he relied more on his speed and collected his points via layups or so-called teardrops. He was elected to the All-Rookie Second Team at the end of the season . The Celtics did not make it into the NBA playoffs with their total of 24 wins.

Even before the next season began, the Celtics traded both Telfair and West, which fixed Rondo's role as the starting player. With all-stars Paul Pierce , Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen around him, he quickly became a solid, confident player. As a reward, he was selected as a sophomore in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge . In his 77 games in the regular season, he averaged 10.6 points, 5.1 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. Thanks to the new signings of the superstars Garnett and Allen and the increase in performance of the existing players, the Celtics made it into the NBA playoffs as the first-placed team in the Eastern Conference. In his playoff debut on April 20, 2008 against the Atlanta Hawks , Rondo scored 15 points, 9 assists and 2 steals. The Celtics prevailed against the Hawks, the Cavaliers and the Pistons and thus came into the NBA Finals. After six games against the Los Angeles Lakers , the Celtics secured the NBA championship. The Lakers coach, Phil Jackson , called Rondo the "star" of the sixth and decisive game of the final series.

In his third NBA season, 2008-09 , the Celtics set an NBA record for the best start to the season and also posted a club record with 19 straight wins. Rondo continued to be criticized for his unsafe jump shot. He scored his first triple-double this season in a game against the Indiana Pacers with 16 points, 17 assists and 13 rebounds. On April 17, 2009, he became the first NBA player to ever sign an advertising contract with Red Bull . Although the Celtics had to do without Kevin Garnett due to injury this season, they qualified as the runner-up team in the Eastern Conference for the playoffs. In a spectacular first round series, the Celtics narrowly prevailed against the Chicago Bulls , but were then defeated by the Orlando Magic after seven games. During the entire playoffs, Rondo achieved almost a triple-double on average: 16.9 points, 9.8 assists and 9.7 rebounds.

During the 2009-10 NBA season , Rondo achieved career highs with points (13.7), assists (9.8) and steals (2.3). On November 2, 2009, he signed a five-year contract valued at $ 55 million with the Celtics. He set two new club records this season: most assists in one season (794) and most steals in one season (189). In the playoffs, the Celtics prevailed against the Miami Heat in five games . In the second round they passed the Cleveland Cavaliers , with Rondo again setting or setting records: In the second game he set the club record for assists in a playoff game (19) and in the fourth game he achieved a playoff career best 29 points and 18 rebounds. He had an additional 13 assists in that game. In the third round, the Celtics prevailed against the Orlando Magic and faced the Los Angeles Lakers again in the NBA Finals. This time they had to admit defeat to the Los Angeles team after seven games.

In August 2010, Rondo should initially participate with the national basketball team of the United States in the World Cup, but then withdrew for family reasons.

In the following NBA season 2010-11 , Rondo scored on October 29, 2010 another triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and the 24 assists not achieved since 1996 in a home game against the New York Knicks . Rondo started the season off very well, setting a new NBA record for most assists in the first five games of the season. With 82 assists, he left NBA legends like John Stockton and Magic Johnson behind. Rondo's record hunt was slowed down in early December by minor injuries and shortly afterwards by a sprained left ankle. The break lasted seven games. Two games after his return, on January 5, 2011 against the San Antonio Spurs , which at that time was a top game between the conference leaders and ended in favor of the Celtics 105-103, Rajon scored the eleventh triple-double of his career with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 23 assists.

Rondo started the first three games of the season with at least 10 assists (13, 11, 12). Since John Stockton 2001/02 (14, 11, 14) nobody had done that. In his last 24 regular season games of the 2011/12 season , Rondo always delivered at least 10 assists. 13 more games in a row were added in the 2012/13 season . The series started on March 11, 2012 with the Lakers and ended abruptly on November 28, 2012 when he was disqualified after a scuffle against the Brooklyn Nets . Across the seasons, Rondo's series ended after 37 games. This puts him, together with John Stockton (1988/89 - 1989/90) and behind Magic Johnson with 46 games (1982/83 - 1983/84), in second place on the best list. In the 2011/12 season , Rondo reached the Conference Finals with the Celtics. There they were defeated by the eventual champions Miami Heat in seven games.

On January 25, 2013, Rondo tore a cruciate ligament in the game against the Atlanta Hawks and was out for the remainder of the season.

Dallas Mavericks (2014 to 2015)

On December 19, 2014, Rajon Rondo was traded to the Dallas Mavericks with Dwight Powell . In return, the Boston Celtics received Brandan Wright , Jameer Nelson and Jae Crowder as well as a future first and a second round pick. At the Mavericks, Rondo had to struggle with some adjustment difficulties to the system of head coach Rick Carlisle and was rarely able to meet the expectations placed in him. By the end of the season, Rondo had an average of 8.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 7.9 assists for Dallas. The Dallas Mavericks waived an extension with Rondo after the contract expired.

Sacramento Kings (2015 to 2016)

In early July 2015, Rondo signed a one-year, $ 10 million deal with the Sacramento Kings . In December 2015, he was suspended from a game for homophobic insult to referee Bill Kennedy. In terms of sport, things went a little better at Rondo. Although he could not qualify with the Kings for the playoffs, but led the league in templates per game with 11.7. He also got six triple doubles for the Kings this season, with which he set a team record.

Chicago Bulls (2016 to 2017)

After his contract expired, the Sacramento Kings announced that they would no longer plan with Rondo. Rondo then signed a contract until 2018 with the Chicago Bulls , who had previously separated from Derrick Rose via Trade. Rondo played 69 games for the Bulls in the regular time of the 2016/17 season . He achieved an average of 7.8 points, 6.7 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game during the season with the Bulls. With the Bulls, Rondo reached the playoffs, in the first round his team was eliminated 2-4 against the Boston Celtics after Chicago won the first two games in the series. Rondo could not prevent the elimination in the playoffs of the Bulls because he injured himself shortly before the end of the second game and missed the remaining games. After the season, the Chicago Bulls parted ways with Rondo.

New Orleans Pelicans (2017 to 2018)

After Rondo was released from the Bulls, he found a new team in the New Orleans Pelicans . He signed a one-year contract. On December 27, 2017, Rondo distributed 25 assists against the Brooklyn Nets and thus set a new career record and exceeded the club's internal record of Chris Paul (22 assists).

Los Angeles Lakers (since 2018)

After the Los Angeles Lakers signed LeBron James , Rondo also signed a one-year deal with the Lakers for $ 9 million.
