Jameer Lamar Nelson (born February 9, 1982 in Chester , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2004 to 2018 . The 1.83 meter tall point guard became an All-Star in his professional career and reached the NBA Finals in 2009 with the Orlando Magic .

Career

college

Nelson played for the Saint Joseph's Hawks , the basketball team at Saint Joseph's University , from 2000 to 2004 . Nelson experienced the most successful college year as a senior in the 2003/04 season, when he led the Hawks into the Elite Eight (quarterfinals) of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournament.

Nelson was named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year for his achievements . In addition, his former jersey with the number 14 is no longer awarded in Saint Joseph's.

NBA

Nelson was selected as the 20th pick in the 2004 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets , who transferred him to the Orlando Magic on the same day . Initially, Nelson was Steve Francis ' substitute , but over time he was able to establish himself as a regular on the point guard position. At the end of the 2004/05 season , Nelson was elected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . Nelson was placed in the position of point guard since Steve Francis' trade in February 2006.

His steadily increasing performance brought him his first nomination for the NBA All-Star Game in the 2008/09 season , in which he was unable to participate due to injury. In addition, the Magic managed to move into the NBA finals this season , where the Los Angeles Lakers had to admit defeat 1: 4.

After ten years with Magic, Nelson was released from his contract early in the summer of 2014 in order to use the salary that became available for future player engagements. He then signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks on July 24, 2014 .

In exchange for Rajon Rondo and Dwight Powell , Nelson joined the Boston Celtics in December 2014 with Brandan Wright and Jae Crowder .

In early January Nelson was traded to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Nate Robinson , where he played until October 2017. For the season 2017/18 Nelson signed with the New Orleans Pelicans . In February 2018 he was transferred to the Chicago Bulls , which however transferred him to the Detroit Pistons seven days later . The Michigan team was Nelson's last stop as a professional basketball player.
