from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The tram-Calais Saint Stephen was the common tram operation of the towns Calais (Maine) and Saint Stephen (New Brunswick) . The eleven-kilometer route network connected the two cities in Maine and New Brunswick , crossing the Saint John River and the state border between the United States and Canada . It was the easternmost streetcar operator in the United States.

The Calais Street Railway Company was founded on March 17, 1893 and opened the standard gauge electric tram on July 4, 1894 . The part of the network in Canada was officially operated by its own company, the Saint Stephen Electric Street Railway Company, which had been founded in 1891. It was fully owned by CSR and was formally leased by it for 99 years. The concession for the operation initially ran for twenty years, but was extended.

On October 31, 1929, operations ceased and the facilities were scrapped.
