As a reward, he was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . He also took part in the Rising Star Challenge as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend and scored 23 points. In his second year Waiters improved to an average of 15.7 points, but the Cavaliers were unsuccessful. With the signing of LeBron James , Waiters slipped off the grid and has been off the bench ever since.
In January 2015, Waiters was transferred from the Cavaliers to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a barter deal . At the Thunder, Waiters was only a bench player and was never entirely convincing. He lost his contract in the summer of 2016. He was then signed by the Miami Heat . Between the start of the 2019/20 season and mid-December 2019, he was given three leave of absence from Miami. According to US media, a recording surfaced in December 2019 showing him on a boat while he was on sick leave. Up to this point he had not played a season game for the team. In October 2019, he had to sit out first because of team-damaging behavior and then in November because of a seizure on the plane that he suffered after consuming a food containing THC .
On March 6, 2020, he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and will play with the Californians until the end of the season.
