San Juan de Rosario is a town in the Potosí department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

San Juan de Rosario is the central place of the canton of San Juan in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Colcha "K" in the province of Nor Lípez . The village is located at an altitude of 2894  m about 35 kilometers southwest of the salt lake Salar de Uyuni , the nearest villages are Colcha "K" fifteen kilometers northeast, and Julaca twenty kilometers east.

San Juan de Rosario is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast. The climate of the region is a distinct daytime climate , in which the temperature differences between day and night fluctuate more clearly than the average values ​​between summer and winter.

San Juan is located at a distance of 352 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Potosí the asphalted highway Ruta 5 leads in a south-westerly direction 198 kilometers to Uyuni , from there it continues to the south-west and after 61 kilometers it reaches the bridge over the Río Grande de Lípez . Behind the bridge, Ruta 5 branches off in a north-westerly direction and after 36 kilometers reaches the village of Río Grande on the railway line from Uyuni to Avaroa on the Chilean border and on to Antofagasta . The road follows the railway line in a south-westerly direction and reaches San Juan after another 57 kilometers via Julaca .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Colcha "K" 90 percent of the inhabitants speak the Quechua language ( 2001 ).
