Julaca is a town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Julaca is a train station and central location of the canton of Julaca and is located in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Colcha "K" in the province of Nor Lípez at an altitude of 3665  m , thirty kilometers south of the Salar de Uyuni salt lake .

Julaca is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andean mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast. The region's climate is typical of the time of day , with the mean temperature fluctuation during the day being more pronounced than during the course of the seasons.

Significant precipitation in the region only falls in the months of January to March (see climate diagram Colcha "K"), the remaining nine months of the year are arid , the total precipitation in the region does not reach 100 mm per year. Transport network

Julaca is located at a distance of 325 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Potosí the asphalted highway Ruta 5 leads in a south-westerly direction 198 kilometers to Uyuni , from there it continues only partly asphalted further to the south-west and after 61 kilometers reaches the bridge over the Río Grande de Lípez . Behind the bridge, Ruta 5 branches off in a north-westerly direction and after 36 kilometers reaches the village of Río Grande on the railway line from Uyuni to Avaroa on the Chilean border and on to Antofagasta . The road follows the railway line in a south-westerly direction and after another 30 kilometers reaches Julaca .
