Nor Lípez is a province in the southwestern part of the Potosí department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

The province of Nor Lípez is one of sixteen provinces in the Department of Potosí. It borders in the north with the province of Daniel Campos , in the west with the Republic of Chile , in the south with the province Enrique Baldivieso and the province Sur Lípez , in the east with the province Sur Chichas , in the northeast with the province Antonio Quijarro , and in the far north to the Oruro Department . The province extends for about 270 kilometers in an east-west direction and 210 kilometers in a north-south direction.

The population of the province of Nor Lípez has increased by around two thirds over the past two decades:

  • 2001 : 10,460 inhabitants (census)
  • 2012 : 14,057 inhabitants (census)

The capital of the province is Colcha "K" . The most important idioms of the province with 89 percent each are in equal parts Quechua and Spanish .

96 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 93 percent live without sanitary facilities. 61 percent of the population work in agriculture , 9 percent in mining , 2 percent in industry and 28 percent in services. 90 percent of the population are Catholic, 6 percent Protestant.

In 1996, large silver deposits were discovered in the vicinity of the municipality of San Cristóbal in the municipality of Colcha "K" . The Banzer government (1997–2002) created the legal requirements for the development of the site and relocated the community. In August 2007, which was open pit "San Cristobal" ( Spanish Minera San Cristóbal ) opened with the annual output of 525 tons of silver , 225,000 tonnes of zinc and 82,000 tons of lead , the world's third largest silver and fifth largest zinc mine is. The raw daily output is 40,000 t.

The opencast mine is supplied with energy from the city of Punutuma . A 65-kilometer branch line was built in 2007 to transport the ore concentrates, which connects the open-cast mine with the Chilean port of Mejillones . In November 2008 the open pit mine was sold by Apex Silver Mines Ltd to the Japanese Sumitomo group. At this point in time it had a planned remaining term of another 16 years.
