Maurice Obstfeld

Maurice Moses Obstfeld (born March 19, 1952 in New York City ) is an American economist . From 2015 to 2018 he was chief economist at the International Monetary Fund . He is considered an expert on questions of foreign trade theory , especially international capital flows . His textbook International Economics: Theory and Policy with Paul Krugman is well known .

Life

From 1969 to 1973 Obstfeld studied at the University of Pennsylvania , in Philadelphia . There he obtained a Bachelor of Arts , which he graduated with summa cum laude . 1973-1975 he studied at King's College of Cambridge University , where he earned a Master acquired.

Between 1975 and 1979, Obstfeld studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 1979 he received his Ph.D. for a thesis on Capital Mobility and Monetary Policy under Fixed and Flexible Exchange Rates .

From 1979 he held various positions at Columbia University before moving to the University of Pennsylvania as a professor in 1986 . Since 1989 he has been a professor at the University of California, Berkeley . Since 2001 he has also acted as an advisor to the Bank of Japan .

In July 2015 the International Monetary Fund announced the appointment of Obstfeld as Chief Economist. In this office he succeeded Olivier Blanchard . In July 2018, the IMF announced that Obstfeld would return to the University of California, Berkeley, in late 2018. Gita Gopinath was his successor .
