San Cristóbal is a town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

San Cristóbal is a central place in the canton of San Cristóbal in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Colcha "K" in the province of Nor Lípez . The village is located at an altitude of 3761  m about 50 kilometers south of the salt lake Salar de Uyuni in the Gran Pampa Pelada , a wide plain north of the Cordillera de Lípez .

San Cristóbal lies on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera de Lípez . The region's climate is semi-arid and characterized by a pronounced time-of-day climate.

The mean average temperature of the region is 7.7 ° C (see climate diagram San Cristóbal) and fluctuates only slightly between 3 ° C in June and July and about 10 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is only 100 mm, whereby the months April to November are almost without precipitation; Significant precipitation falls only in the months of January and February with 30 mm per month each.

Transport network

San Cristóbal is located 286 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Potosí, the asphalted highway Ruta 5 leads 198 kilometers in a south-westerly direction to Uyuni , from there Ruta 701 continues to the south-west and after 61 kilometers crosses the Río Grande de Uyuni and after another 27 kilometers it reaches the village of San Cristóbal .
