Chiguana is a town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Chiguana is the central place of the canton Chiguana and is located in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) San Pedro de Quemes in the province of Nor Lípez at an altitude of 3685 m . The village is one of the last train stations on the Uyuni - Antofagasta line before the Chilean border.

Chiguana is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andean mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast. The region has a distinctive time-of-day climate in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than in the course of the seasons.
The annual average temperature of the region is just under 8 ° C (see climate diagram Avaroa), the monthly values fluctuate only slightly between 4 ° C in June / July and 10 ° C from December to February. Chiguana is located at a distance of 340 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.
From Potosí, the Ruta 5 trunk road leads 198 kilometers south-west to Uyuni and from there another 61 kilometers to the bridge over the Río Grande de Lípez . After the bridge, the road turns north-west and after 36 kilometers reaches the village of Río Grande . From here the track largely follows the railway line to the southwest and reaches Chiguana via the village of Julaca after 80 kilometers .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a certain proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of San Pedro de Quemes 24.9 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
