Chuvica (also: Puerto Chuvica ) is a town in the Potosí Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Chuvica is the central place of the canton Chuvica in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Colcha "K" in the province of Nor Lípez . The village is located on the southern edge of the Salar de Uyuni , with an area of ​​more than 10,000 square kilometers, the largest salt lake in the world.

Chuvica is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast. The region's climate is typical of the time of day , with the mean temperature fluctuation during the day being more pronounced than during the course of the seasons.

Significant precipitation falls only in the months of January to March (see climate diagram Colcha "K"), the remaining nine months of the year are arid , the total precipitation in the region does not reach 100 mm per year. Chuvica is located at a distance of 367 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Potosí the asphalted highway Ruta 5 leads in a south-westerly direction 198 kilometers to Uyuni , from there it continues to the south-west and after 61 kilometers it reaches the bridge over the Río Grande de Lípez . Behind the bridge, Ruta 5 branches off in a north-westerly direction and after 36 kilometers reaches the village of Río Grande on the railway line from Uyuni to Avaroa on the Chilean border and on to Antofagasta . The road follows the railway line in a south-westerly direction and after another 30 kilometers reaches Julaca . Directly behind Julaca, an unpaved salt track branches off in a north-westerly direction and leads for another 19 kilometers via Mañica to Colcha "K" and for another 23 kilometers to Chuvica .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Colcha "K" 90 percent of the inhabitants speak the Quechua language ( 2001 ).
