Río Grande is a town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Río Grande is the central place of the canton of Río Grande and is located in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Colcha "K" in the province of Nor Lípez at an altitude of 3669 m , fifteen kilometers south of the Salar de Uyuni salt lake .

Río Grande is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andean mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast. The climate of the region is semi-arid and a typical time of day climate , in which the fluctuation of mean temperatures during the day is more pronounced than during the course of the seasons.

Río Grande is located 295 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.
From Potosí the paved highway Ruta 5 leads in a south-westerly direction 198 kilometers to Uyuni , from there the partially unpaved Ruta 701 continues to the south-west and after 61 kilometers reaches the bridge over the Río Grande de Lípez . Behind the bridge, a country road branches off in a north-westerly direction and after 36 kilometers reaches the town of Río Grande , which runs on the railway line from Uyuni to Avaroa on the Chilean border and on to Antofagasta . From Río Grande, the road continues to Julaca and Calcha "K" .
