CNBC [siˌʲɛnbisiː] (originally an acronym for Consumer News and Business Channel ; translated: Verbrauchernachrichten- and business channel ) is a group of news channels. They belong to the family of broadcasters from NBCUniversal , a Comcast subsidiary . CNBC and its international offshoots broadcast business news and provide live information about events on the financial markets . According to their own information, the stations reach a total of around 390 million viewers worldwide.

history

On April 17, 1989, NBC and Cablevision created the American broadcaster Consumer News and Business Channel . The program was produced in the studios in Fort Lee , New Jersey . In May 1991 the station merged with the competing channel FNN (Financial News Network). CNBC previously struggled with a shortage of viewers. The top dog FNN got into financial difficulties. As part of the association, not only the former co-owner Cablevision sold his shares in NBC. The original name Consumer News and Business Channel was also dropped. Until the mid-1990s, the channel was called CNBC / FNN.

In 1995, the station also gained a foothold on the Asian continent and founded the business channel CNBC Asia . CNBC Europe followed a year later . In 1997, CNBC and Dow Jones & Company entered into a strategic partnership. This provided for a close cooperation with the news agency Dow Jones Newswires and the newspaper The Wall Street Journal. In the same year, CNBC Asia and CNBC Europe merged with the Dow Jones news channels ABN (Asia Business News) and EBN (European Business News). From then on, CNBC and its international branches always carried the subheading A Service of NBC and Dow Jones (a service by NBC and Dow Jones).

With the boom of the Internet and the resulting technologies and business areas, the station reached more and more viewers. In 2003, the channel switched studios, moving to Englewood Cliffs , New Jersey. The complete conversion to digital video production took place there. In addition, CNBC US has been broadcasting the high definition program CNBC HD + since October 10, 2007 .

In late 2005, Dow Jones sold its shares in CNBC Asia and CNBC Europe to NBC. However, the collaboration with the American broadcaster remained unaffected.

CNBC is NBC Universal's second most profitable cable broadcaster in the United States, with 2007 profits of over $ 333 million (sales of approximately $ 510 million). On October 15, 2007, CNBC received competition from the similarly conceived business broadcaster Fox Business Network from media mogul Rupert Murdoch in the United States . He plans to spread his program worldwide.

The appearance of the stock market moderator Rick Santelli , a former hedge fund manager on February 19, 2009 is considered an important moment in the establishment of the Tea Party . Live from the stock market, the raging Rick Santelli no longer saw the banks, which were bailed out with billions by the government as the culprits of the financial crisis, but rather the “loser” homeowners who had got into trouble. He meant: "The government is promoting bad behavior". Then he called in front of the camera: “We're thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party in July. All you capitalists who want to show up at Lake Michigan, I'm going to start organizing ”.

It is broadcast live every trading day between 0:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time). CNBC International

On December 9, 1997 , Dow Jones and NBC announced a joint venture to introduce international versions of CNBC. The primary operations are CNBC Europe from London and CNBC Asia from Hong Kong and Singapore . Since June 1, 2007, CNBC Africa has been broadcasting from its headquarters in Sandton, Johannesburg. Every day, the employees put together a nine-hour business program for Africa. Most of the rest of the time, the program is handled by CNBC Europe. However, there are also some programs from CNBC Asia and CNBC (US).

NBC Universal also has a channel for Latin America ( CNBC Latin America ) on which the live program is transferred from the US CNBC, and since its merger with NBC Universal, the CNBC World Live program. There are also a number of local CNBC services such as the Japanese version ( Nikkei -CNBC), the Turkish version (CNBC-e), and the South Korean version (SBS-CNBC). The international variants of CNBC broadcast the same type of programming as CNBC US and its major business programs. CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia broadcasts can be viewed in North America on the cable network CNBC World . In India, CNBC Asia is represented by Television Eighteen, a company that hosts an English-language business news station called CNBC TV18 and a Hindi business news station called Awaaz. CNBC TV18 is also India's most watched English news channel. In Germany, CNBC Europe was involved in a cooperation with N24 for stock exchange reporting until 2009 . Since then, N24 has been cooperating with German investor television for its stock market news .
