career

Alba Berlin

From 2013/14 he also collected playing time in the 1st regional league in the jersey of Alba's second men's team. college

Wagner in March 2017

For the 2015/16 season, Wagner moved to the United States at the University of Michigan . After he had to make do with a mean playing time of 8.6 minutes per game in his freshman season in the USA (and thereby scored 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds per bet), Wagner got a sophomore in the 2016/17 season played a much larger role: he was used for almost 24 minutes per game and was the third-best thrower of his team over the course of the game year with an average of 12.1 points, which advanced under the Sweet Sixteen in the finals of the NCAA and there with 68:69 University of Oregon was defeated. In April 2017, Wagner signed up for the NBA Draft , but on May 24th announced his decision to withdraw and continue to run for the University of Michigan in the 2017/18 season.

In the 2017/18 game year he reached the final with Michigan in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship known as March Madness , where he became the first player since Larry Bird (1979) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1983) in the semi- final victory in the Final Four against the Loyola Ramblers. scored over 20 points and at least 15 rebounds, namely 24 and 15. In the final, Wagner scored 16 points, but lost the game with his team against Villanova (62:79). In total, the Berliner achieved an average of 14.6 points per match in 38 season appearances, making him the Wolverines' top scorer . In addition, he collected an average of 7.1 rebounds per game, which also meant the highest value within the team.

NBA

After completing his junior season , Wagner announced his registration for the NBA draft process in mid-April 2018 , so he decided to step into the professional camp and waived his fourth and final year as a senior at the University of Michigan. In June 2018, the Los Angeles Lakers secured the rights to Wagner. He was selected 25th overall in the first draft round. Due to knee problems, he missed parts of the preparation for his NBA debut year. At the end of October 2018, he was moved to the South Bay Lakers training team in the NBA G-League to continue his training there after the knee injury. On November 3, 2018, like his compatriot Isaac Bonga, he played his first game for the South Bay Lakers, stood on the field for 29 minutes in the 106: 108 defeat against the Stockton Kings and scored 17 points. In the NBA, he was on the field for the Los Angeles Lakers for the first time on November 17, 2018 in the game against Orlando Magic , but remained without points in his two-minute debut. Wagner came to 40 missions for Los Angeles in his first NBA year, in which he averaged 4.7 points. His best point total in a game was 22 in March 2019 against Boston, when he was in the starting line-up for the first time in an NBA game.

Wagner was given to the Washington Wizards by the Lakers during the 2019 summer break as part of an exchange deal together with other players, including Isaac Bonga . In mid-November 2019 he set new highs in Washington’s 137: 116 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves with 30 points and 15 rebounds in his NBA career to date.

National team

In 2014 Wagner played the U18 European Championship (B group) in Bulgaria with the German national team and won the tournament with the selection of the German Basketball Federation . At the U20 European Championship in summer 2017, which the German team finished seventh, Wagner was the best thrower in the DBB selection with 16.1 points per use. In August 2019, he made his debut in the men's national team in a World Cup preparation game against Sweden.

Style of play

Wagner's game is characterized by a good throw from distance. In addition, thanks to his mobility, he is able to dribble past similarly sized opponents and then come to a conclusion close to the basket. He also benefits from his agility and speed when switching from defense to attack. He went to the USA as a "very thin boy" and gained muscle mass over the course of his time in college, Wagner said in 2018.
