career

Start time

Pitino played on the University of Massachusetts Amherst basketball team for three years after high school . He was mainly used as a point guard .

Coaching career

Following his college days, he started his coaching career in 1974, initially as an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and later at Syracuse University .

From 1978 Pitino took over Boston University as a trainer. After receiving an offer from the New York Knicks as an assistant coach, he left Boston University in 1983 and assisted Hubie Brown with the Knicks for two years. In 1985 he accepted an offer from Providence College . In 1987 he led his Friars with the then Guard Billy Donovan for the first time into the National Collegiate Athletic Association - Final Four and was honored with the admission into the Providence College Hall of Fame .

In the same year, Pitino received another offer to switch to the NBA. This time as the coach of the New York Knicks. He led the Knicks to Patrick Ewing and Mark Jackson in 1988 and 1989 in the NBA playoffs. Nevertheless, he then left the Knicks and became a coach at the University of Kentucky , whose program he rebuilt after a scandal about the previous coach Eddie Sutton and with whose Wildcats he won the 1996 NCAA Division I Basketball Championship . In 1997 he succeeded again in the NCAA finals, where however the University of Arizona was defeated.

He then accepted an offer from the Boston Celtics in 1997 as their coach until 2001. However, the Celtics were an unsuccessful franchise under him that failed to reach the playoffs. After twelve wins from 32 games in the 2000/01 NBA season , Pitino was sacked by the Celtics. Pitino then took over the University of Louisville . With the Cardinals he reached the NCAA Final Four for the first time in 19 years. In 2012 and 2013 he repeated this success. In 2013 he won the NCAA championship for the second time with Louisville, making him the first NCAA Division I coach to win a championship with two different college teams.

In his career as a college coach, Pitino has 770 wins in over 1000 games (74% win rate). His NBA odds are 192 wins in 412 NBA games (46.6% win rate). Pitino has been a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame since 2013 .

Rick Pitino (2012)

Between 2010 and 2015, Pitino also oversaw the Puerto Rico national basketball team . He resigned in September 2015 after the team finished fifth in the South American elimination round for the 2016 Summer Olympics under his leadership.

In late September 2017, Pitino was sacked as head coach at the University of Louisville with immediate effect. The day before, the US Federal Police had informed the FBI that they had started investigations against two unnamed Louisville coaches for unauthorized payments to high school players. Adidas employees were also arrested in connection with the bribery scandal. In June 2017, Pitino was banned from the NCAA for the first five games of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 2017/18 season. The NCAA saw it as proven that Pitino was guilty of failure to monitor the manager of his team. According to NCAA investigations, the manager had supplied prostitutes to high school players courted by Louisville, among others.

On December 26, 2018, Pitino signed a half-year deal with Greek record champions Panathinaikos Athens . Pitino won the Greek championship and the cup competition with Panathinaikos. He turned down a contract extension he had been offered at the end of the 2018/19 season, as he preferred to return to the United States for family reasons.

In November 2019 he was introduced as the new coach of the Greek national team. He was given the task of overseeing the selection at the elimination tournament for the 2020 Summer Olympics. At the end of November 2019, he also took over the coaching position at Panathinaikos. This dual role prompted three national players under contract with Panathinaikos' arch-rivals Olympiacos Piraeus to indicate in a letter to the Greek association that they did not want to play under Pitino as coach of the Greek national team.

In mid-March 2020, Iona College ( New Rochelle , New York) announced Pitino's appointment as head coach.
