Edward Eugene "Eddie" Sutton (born March 12, 1936 in Bucklin , Kansas ; † May 23, 2020 in Tulsa , Oklahoma ) was an American basketball coach . He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020 .
Career
Sutton played three years under the direction of Hank Iba for the Aggies , which were given the name Cowboys with the renaming of Oklahoma A&M College to Oklahoma State University in its senior year . The following year he was Iba's assistant coach and then took over the Tulsa Central High School Braves of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) as head coach and coached the junior college team of the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles in Idaho Falls between 1966 and 1969 .
In the following 36 years as coach of a Division I program of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), he only had seasons with positive results with the Creighton Bluejays , the Arkansas Razorbacks , the Kentucky Wildcats and his alma mater , the Oklahoma State Cowboys .
Only with the San Francisco Dons , whom he looked after as an interim coach after his retirement, did he score a defeat. With the six victories of the Dons this season, he broke the sound barrier of 800 career victories, an achievement that only seven other Division I coaches achieved (as of 2020). The University of San Francisco's program was the first that Sutton couldn't get into the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournament . No other coach had ever brought four different universities into the NCAA tournament before him.
