The Creighton University is a private, Roman Catholic university based in Omaha in the State of Nebraska . It was founded by Jesuits in 1878 and is one of 28 members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities . It is the largest private religious university in Nebraska.

About 7,700 people study on the campus on the outskirts of the city center.

history

On September 2, 1878, Creighton College was founded. It was a gift from Mary Lucretia Creighton who founded the college in memory of her husband, noted businessman Edward Creighton . The early days were mainly shaped by his brother John Creighton. In 1958 the college was divided into the Creighton Preparatory School and today's university.

Creighton Bluejays

The stages of the bluejays

The Creighton Bluejay is the mascot of the university's athletics department, which has been part of the NCAA Division I Big East Conference since 2013 . 14 teams are maintained in eight sports.

Famous basketball alumni include Paul Silas , Benoit Benjamin , Kyle Korver and Doug McDermott . Former trainers are Eddie Sutton and Willis Reed .

The soccer team took part in the NCAA finals 17 times between 1992 and 2008, and in 2000 it was even enough for the championship game. The home games are played in the 6,000-seat Morrison Stadium .

The baseball team competed in the 1991 NCAA College World Series . The women's softball team competed in the Women's College World Series in 1982 and 1986 , and six times in the last eight NCAA tournaments.

There are eleven academic fraternities: Phi Beta Gamma, Alpha Sigma Nu, Sigma Pi Sigma, Psi Chi, Phi Sigma, Phi Sigma Tau, Pi Sigma Alpha, Sigma Tau Delta, Beta Alpha Psi, Eta Sigma Phi, Alpha Psi Omega.

Organizations

Including the connections mentioned, there are over 200 student organizations at the university.

Within the performing arts there is the Department of Fine and Performing Arts , which runs numerous choirs and ensembles. The Creighton Dance Company offers various dance classes and maintains teams. In addition, plays are produced.

Since 1924 the student magazine Creightonian has been published every Friday during the lecture period . In 2007 and 2008 the newspaper was voted the best university newspaper in Nebraska. In 2007 and 2010 she was nominated for the Pacemaker Award , one of the most important awards for student journalism. Members also won various awards. In addition, the literary and artistically oriented magazine Shadows is published.

A large number of organizations at the university are geared towards common interests within the student body:

Alumni

Almost 58,000 alumni from 93 countries are affiliated with the university. They include the late American astronaut Michael Philip Anderson , Coca-Cola operations director Donald Keough, and still-active basketball players Kyle Korver , Doug McDermott and Anthony Tolliver .
