Idaho Falls [ ˈaɪdəhoʊ ˈfɔːls ] is a city in the US state of Idaho . It is located in the Snake River Plain , is the county seat of Bonneville County and is the fourth largest city in Idaho with about 60,000 inhabitants (as of July 1, 2016, US Census Bureau ).

history

The eponymous waterfalls, behind it the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple

In 1865, James Madison Taylor , called "Matt Taylor", built a toll bridge over the Snake River , known as "Taylor's Bridge", which replaced a ferry that had previously operated a little upstream. A bank, a hotel and other infrastructure have settled around the bridge. From 1872 the place was called Eagle Rock and got its current name in 1891, Idaho Falls , after the waterfalls under the bridge. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) built its eighth temple, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple, here from 1937 to 1941 .

Economy and Infrastructure

The city is heavily influenced by agriculture. In 1949, the United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) founded the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), a nuclear research facility, in the adjacent desert . There is also a branch office of Idaho State University (ISU). In the last few decades, trade, the service industry and tourism have grown in importance and contributed to the region's boom. With an unemployment rate of 2.5%, Idaho Falls is full of employment (as of February 2019).

Idaho Falls is located on Interstate 15, which runs north-south, and on US Highway 91 .
