Bonanza ( Spanish for 'wealth') is a village in Custer County , Idaho and is located on the Yankee Fork Salmon River in the Salmon-Challis National Forest . The former gold rush town is no longer inhabited.

After the gold was found in the Yankee Fork Valley, the Bonanza settlement was established in 1877. Although there were no mines in the city , the city developed quickly, as early as 1881 about 600 people lived in Bonanza. At that time, Bonanza had a post office , its own newspaper , a school , a hotel, as well as several shops, restaurants, saloons and leisure activities. After two fires in 1889 and 1897, many people moved to nearby Custer . After gold mining stalled in the region in the early 20th century, Bonanza became a ghost town .

Today in Bonanza, in addition to the ruins of the gold rush, there is also the old cemetery and the forest administration station built in 1934 near the Civilian Conservation Corps .
