Under the red lantern of St. Pauli is a German tango song from the 1940s.
The song was composed by Ralph Maria Siegel . Günther Schwenn and Peter Schaeffers provided the text . The song refers to the Hamburg district of St. Pauli as the red light district of the port city.
Lale Andersen interpreted the song on 10-inch shellac record , which was released in 1942 by Electrola, 1948 by Decca and 1949 by Telefunken . The song was one of Lale Andersen's three most popular songs after 1945. First the song was published in 1941 by Sven-Olof Sandberg with accompanying orchestra under the direction of Adolf Steimel at Odeon . In the same year the music was published by the Berlin music publisher Peter Schaeffers. The song is one of the well-known hits of 1941.
Lolita (1979), Gerhard Wendland (1969), Peter Kraus (1961), Lys Assia together with the orchestra of Peter Kreuder and Lale Andersen (1942) are among the many well-known performers who have recorded the song. Decca released a recording with Will Glahé and his orchestra in 1954 .
