Peter Kraus (born March 18, 1939 as Peter Siegfried Krausnecker in Munich ) is an Austrian actor and singer .

Life

education

The son of the Austrian director and cabaret artist Fred Kraus (actually Krausnecker) and a woman from Munich spent his youth alternately in Munich , Graefelfing , Vienna and Salzburg , where his father had his own small theater . During his school days, Peter Kraus took singing lessons, took acting and step courses and began his acting career in the mid-1950s with the role of Johnny in The Flying Classroom (1954) based on the book of the same name by Erich Kästner .

family

In 1969 Peter Kraus and the model Ingrid Nieuweboer married. She brought her daughter Gaby, who was adopted by Kraus, into the marriage. In 1973 their son Michael was born, who like his father is on stage and makes music. Peter Kraus lives with his wife on Lake Lugano in Switzerland and owns a farm and a winery in Gamlitz in Styria.

Rock 'n' roll star and cuddly singer

Like Ted Herold , Kraus was produced by music producer Gerhard Mendelson for Polydor Records in Vienna. Mendelson discovered Peter Kraus after his first public concert in October 1956 in Munich. In the same year Kraus' first single was created, a German version of Little Richard's Tutti Frutti . Kraus soon developed into one of the most popular German-speaking rock 'n' roll singers and teenage idols ; the young man's lanky and casual demeanor was well received by the adolescents. In the first four years after his debut , Kraus brought out 36 titles and at that time already sold over 12 million records. In June 1957 the first hit parade note (rank 8) was produced with Susi Rock .

Single At Seventeen (1958)

From then until 1964 Kraus was regularly in the German charts. In 1958 he recorded the titles When Teens Dream , Hula Baby , The Popular Sugar Baby and At Seventeen (August 1958; Rank 2); 1959 followed his version of Tiger . Producer Mendelson acquired the rights to hit US songs in order to produce them with German lyrics with Peter Kraus. So in less than eight years, 36 singles were created. That was the main reason why Kraus was never able to sell more than a million copies with a title, because the singles competed with each other and their publication rate was too short. After all, Sugar Baby sold 600,000 singles; the title earned him the Golden Lion from Radio Luxemburg . In the beginning Kraus was still strongly influenced by Elvis Presley , but he increasingly managed to find his own style. A total of 13 of his titles were penned by Fini Busch .

Kraus adapted his songs to changing musical tastes and made his mark in the early 1960s as Germany's number 1 "cuddle singer". In 1961, he sang the waltz Black Rose Rosemarie and thus reached number 5 on the German charts. He received the Bronze Lion from Radio Luxembourg , and in 1962 he continued his commercial success with other classic blues titles such as Silvermoon and Sweety .

Kraus published together with Jörg Maria Berg also some titles under the pseudonym James Brothers . He also sang with Conny Froboess and Connie Francis , Lill-Babs , Danny Mann , Alice and Ellen Kessler , Gus Backus and Gina Dobra, among others .

In 2014, Peter Kraus completed the tour The best comes at the end through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It was announced as his last tour, but in March and April 2018 he played a series of concerts under the tour title Schön was die Zeit .

actor

Even before the rock 'n' roll wave subsided, Peter Kraus was active as an actor in films and on television, for example in My Husband's Girlfriend (1957) and The Pauker (1958), both directed by Axel von Ambesser , or in The Early Matures , directed by Josef von Báky . He also went on tour with his songs, which also took him to France , England , Italy , the Netherlands , Sweden and America .

As a "nice boy next door" he sang in a duet with the female teenage idol Conny Froboess and appeared with her in hit films , such as 1958 in When Conny with Peter and 1960 in Conny and Peter make music , albeit legal obstacles between the record company of Kraus and that of Froboess ( Electrola ) were difficult to overcome. Both became the most popular screen stars of the late 1950s among Germany's young people. In 1959, Peter Kraus and his father Fred Kraus, who also played his father in the film, performed in melody and rhythm (premiere on September 11, 1959).

At the end of the 1980s Peter Kraus played the fashion designer Heinrich Wolfgruber in the television series The Happy Family (produced by BR ).

In the youth comedy System Fehler - Wenn Inge tanzt from 2013, Kraus plays an aging pop singer.

In 1970 Kraus was showmaster of the TV entertainment series Bäng-Bäng in 18 episodes . In the same year he appeared in the ZDF hit parade with the hit Hokuspokus Fidibus . His appearances in the series 8 × 1 in Noten and Hallo Peter, produced by his father, were equally popular .

Kraus has also appeared in a number of television musicals , such as Die Pickwickier , Bel Ami , Ein Walzertraum , Wenn der Vater mit der Sohn , Ransgeld für Mylady and No, no, Nannette . In 1986, after 26 years in the thriller The Summer of the Samurai by Hans-Christoph Blumenberg, he was back in front of the camera with Cornelia Froboess .

In the early summer of 1999 he came out with a new CD (Ich mach weiter) and in the autumn of the same year he went on a tour of Germany with it. In total, Peter Kraus sold more than 17 million records. In 1990 he published his memoirs under the allusive title Wop-baba-lu-ba - my rocked life . He became known as a painter through pictures that recall the works of Roy Lichtenstein , through various exhibitions in Zurich and St. Moritz.

Kraus received numerous awards and honors, including the Bravo Otto from 1959 to 1962 . On January 28, 2003 Kraus received the Silver Medal of Honor of the State of Vienna and in 2004 the Amadeus Austrian Music Award for his life's work. On March 12, 2006, Peter Kraus was awarded the Echo - also for his life's work.

In the third season of Let's Dance (April / May 2010) Kraus was one of the four jurors .

On October 1, 2017, Kraus was seriously injured and broke his shoulder in the Eurovision show Spiel für dein Land - The largest quiz in Europe . In this live TV show, Kraus represented Austria as a candidate together with ORF presenters Verena Scheitz and Kati Bellowitsch . Despite the great pain, he continued to play for an hour until, after consulting a doctor, he was taken out of the game and immediately taken to the hospital.
