Axel von Ambesser (born June 22, 1910 in Hamburg , † September 6, 1988 in Munich ; actually Axel Eugen Alexander von Oesterreich ) was one of the most famous German actors , film directors and authors of the post-war period .

Life

Axel von Ambesser was born in Hamburg in 1910 as the son of the import and export merchant Alexander von Oesterreich (1875–1949) and his wife Marie Luise von Massow (1881–1953), a daughter of General Robert von Massow . He chose his stage name "Axel von Ambesser" on the advice of his father in order to be mentioned early on in alphabetical order. Without acting training, he received an engagement at the Hamburger Kammerspiele from artistic director Erich Ziegel and, while he was already acting, received acting lessons from Hans Stiebner and Maria Loja . During this time he also joined the collective of Hamburg actors founded by his friends Gerhard Hinze and Hanuš Burger . During the Third Reich he worked in various theater companies. As a youthful hero he came to the Stadttheater Augsburg , then to the Münchner Kammerspiele with Otto Falckenberg for roles as a lover and character comedian and already in 1936 with Heinz Hilpert at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin . During Hilpert's double directorship, he played at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna . Gustaf Gründgens finally signed him to the State Theater Berlin. He also worked as an actor in various films, such as B. Women are not angels (1943). Ambesser was listed on Joseph Goebbels ' list of the gifted gods as an important actor for film production.

After the Second World War , Axel von Ambesser also increasingly worked as an author for the stage, film and television and the post-war cabaret Die Schaubude in Munich, for which he also wrote many articles on tour. He also worked successfully as a film director. His best-known and most successful films are Der Pauker (1958) and Der brave Soldat Schwejk nach Jaroslav Hašek (1960) (both with Heinz Rühmann ), the latter of which received a Golden Globe for best foreign film in the USA ; also Der Gauner und der liebe Gott (1960 with Gert Fröbe ), Kohlhiesels Töchter (1962 with Liselotte Pulver ) and the Pater Brown film He Can't Leave It (1962), also with Heinz Rühmann. During this time Axel von Ambesser was also seen as an actor, for example in Gustav Adolf's Page as Wallenstein . He had his last stage roles in the world premiere of Curth Flatow's Romeo with gray temples in Munich and as Emperor Franz Joseph in Ralph Benatzky's operetta Im Weißen Rößl at the Raimund Theater in Vienna .

In later years, Ambesser was often seen on television, including a. in encounter in autumn , omelette surprise , the curtain falls , large train station , old sins do not rust and in the crime scene - advertising murder . Shortly before his death in 1988, he appeared again in front of the camera for the Black Forest Clinic as "Landesgerichtsrat Eckner" in the episode The Old Man . Axel von Ambesser was born in 1937 with the actress Inge von Oesterreich-Ambesser. Flemming (1914–1995) married. Like her father, his daughter Gwendolyn von Ambesser works as a director, author and actress and also as a set designer.

Axel von Ambesser was buried in the old Niendorfer cemetery in Hamburg. His real surname v. Austria . In Munich there since 1990 in the district of Sendling the Axel von Ambesser Street .

In April 2011, a biography about Axel von Ambesser, written by his daughter Gwendolyn , was published under the title Actors cannot be grasped. His extensive written estate is in the archive of the Academy of Arts in Berlin .
