George Farquhar

George Farquhar ([ ˈdʒɔːɹdʒ ˈfɑːkə ]; * approx. 1677 in Derry ; †  April 29, 1707 in London ) was an Irish playwright . He was a representative of the restoration comedy .

Life

Farquhar studied at Trinity College in Dublin , where he became an actor at the Smock Alley Theater. After accidentally injuring a colleague, he stopped working on stage and turned to playwriting. He came to London's Theater Royal Drury Lane , where in 1698 his first play, Love and a Bottle , was performed. His second piece, A Constant Couple , established his fame and remained popular through the 18th century. His work as a recruiting officer in the Shropshire region in 1704 and 1705 was reflected in his piece The Recruiting Officer , which Benno Besson performed in 1955 as drums and trumpets in the Berliner Ensemble . Farquhar died a poor man.

His pieces, which are distinguished by their light humor and realism, have satirical elements and, beyond what is usual in restoration comedy, his stage works have emotional depth and a variety of plot.
