The Beautiful Liar is a German-French feature film from 1959.

The film is set in Vienna during the Vienna Congress in 1815. The beautiful, young Fanny Emmetsrieder comes from a humble background and works as a corset tailor . She falls in love with the young Martin, who as a valet of Prince Metternich outputs. However, Martin has kept his true origin from her. In fact, he is a count himself who should never have entered into a relationship with the lower-class girl. When she learns the true identity of her lover, she is angry and makes her way to the palace, where the Congress of Vienna is being held. There she meets the Russian Tsar Alexander . The Tsar thinks she is a young noblewoman and invites her to a ball. Fanny can no longer get out of the lies and plays the sophisticated young lady from a noble family to the assembled delegates of Europe. The highlight of their story is the claim that Napoleon Bonaparte fled the island of Elba . Your credible description triggers a general mobilization of Napoleon's European opponents. Fanny is extremely shocked by the hasty actionism of the European rulers. She admits the story of lies. However, when reality catches up with her stories and news reaches Vienna that Napoleon has actually returned to France, she becomes a heroine. Tsar Alexander appoints her to the nobility and finally she can marry her lover Martin appropriately.

The film was based on a musical comedy by Just Scheu and Ernst Nebhut . The premiere of the film took place on September 10, 1959 in the Turm-Palast in Frankfurt am Main . In France, the French-dubbed version was released on June 1, 1960 under the title La Belle et l'Empereur .

Under the same title, Bayerischer Rundfunk broadcast a radio play version edited by Fritz Benscher on January 30, 1955 , in which he also directed and acted as a speaker.
