action

Dr. Hermann Seidel, a complacent teacher, is transferred from the provinces to the big city . Here he meets a class with unruly young people . Seidel is an old school "Pauker" (teacher). His methods provoke the difficult boys. A power struggle begins between teacher and class.

The youngsters have to get used to the new situation just like the old-fashioned teacher. Seidel follows the youngsters into an amusement arcade, where they spend a large part of their free time. The youth leader, Harry Engelmann, who has already been thrown out of school, has just manipulated one of the slot machines here in order to cash in. This is unintentionally prevented by Seidel, because he chooses this machine to show that you cannot win. Seidel wins several times in a row and is interrogated by the police the next day. However, he can convince the arcade owner and the police of his innocence.

After a nightly threat from his class, Seidel takes lessons in catching from his neighbor Freddy Blei .

He's slowly getting closer to the teenagers . Seidel even lends Achim Bork 30  DM to pay off his debts in a motorcycle workshop after he caught him attempting theft. To work off the debts, he gets Achim a job in the junkyard. The ice is gradually melting as the teacher and the teenagers repair an old car and give them driving lessons. Harry Engelmann physically attacks Seidel as his influence in the group shrinks. Seidel can defend himself well through his catch training, but is ultimately knocked down. This gives him a lot of recognition from his students. The group of students who sympathize with Seidel is growing steadily.

When Engelmann manipulates the brakes of the car that the students use for driving lessons and one of the students is injured, Seidel is threatened with expulsion from school. His class is now closed to him and Engelmann flees from the police. Seidel develops into the most popular teacher of the students and the teaching staff is surprised by the never expected success of the Pauker Seidel.

Reviews

“Heinz Rühmann gives the title role tragic-comic accents; otherwise the comedy is primarily of interest as an insight into the conservative climate of the 50s . "
