Heinz Hilpert
Heinz Hilpert (born March 1, 1890 in Berlin , † November 25, 1967 in Göttingen ) was a German actor and theater director .
Life
Hilpert was one of the great theater directors of the 1920s and 1930s. After training as a primary school teacher, he studied German language and literature, philosophy and art history at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin and began acting as an actor at the Berlin Volksbühne in 1919 , playing brothers in the film . Between heaven and earth together with the expressionist writer Walter Hasenclever . Hilpert got to know Carl Zuckmayer , whose works he often staged. Max Reinhardt brought him to the Deutsches Theater Berlin in 1926 and made him its senior director. There he staged the world premiere of Der Hauptmann von Köpenick on March 5, 1931 and thus achieved one of his greatest successes. In the same year he staged the world premiere of Stories from the Vienna Woods . After his brief return to the Volksbühne in 1932 as director, the National Socialists made him director of the Deutsches Theater in 1934 and thus the direct successor of Max Reinhardt, who had been driven into exile. He remained artistic director until the Berlin theaters were closed on September 1, 1944. After the “ Anschluss ” of Austria, Hilpert was also director of the Josefstadt theater from 1938 to 1945 . During the National Socialism, Hilpert stood up for the persecuted and was able to preserve a certain artistic freedom in his theaters. The prominent theater man Hilpert occasionally worked as an actor and director for the film.
After the Second World War , he initially had great problems continuing his theater work because of his career under the Nazis. He lived in Zurich for a while and staged performances in Vienna, Salzburg and Zurich, where he brought out the world premiere of Zuckmayer's Des Teufels General on December 14, 1946 at the Schauspielhaus . In 1947 he became director of the theater in Frankfurt am Main for one season . After the successful re-establishment of the theater in Konstanz in 1949, he became director in Göttingen in 1950 . He stayed here until 1966 and made the Deutsches Theater Göttingen one of the leading theaters in the young Federal Republic. As a close friend of Zuckmayer, he premiered his works Der Gesang im Feuerofen (1950) and Ulla Winblad (1954) here. He was also responsible for the German premiere of the drama Conflict in Assyria (September 15, 1957), a political-satirical allegory of Nazi rule in the guise of the biblical Esther myth by Walter Hasenclever, which was only available in London under the title Trouble in Assyria was staged in English (April 30, 1939).
On the occasion of his departure from Göttingen, he was awarded the city's medal of honor . After 1966 he worked as a freelance director.
In Lünen an der Lippe, the theater of the city of Lünen with 765 seats was inaugurated on October 11, 1958, with Heinz Hilpert giving the baptismal address. Since March 1966 the theater has been called the Heinz Hilpert Theater . It was built according to plans by the architect Gerhard Graubner .
Since 1955 he was a full member of the Academy of Arts .
Hilpert's students include Jan Schlubach , Götz George and Hermann Wedekind . His estate is in the archive of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
