action

The wealthy general director Werneck, once the founder of the Werneck country school home in Klein-Wiesental, receives a letter from teacher Miss Säuberlich in which she describes the intolerable conditions at the school. The students never follow the lessons, instead they only play jazz music and the caretaker is constantly drunk and should actually be fired. Werneck decides to take a look at the conditions. He auditioned under the name Max Weber as the new caretaker and was hired for a two-week trial. After these two weeks, not only the end of the school year, but also the big music festival of the country school homes in the country school home Werneck is planned.

In fact, this is the main reason why the students have little interest in school. In Latin, with the strict teacher Dr. Schumann, many only succeed in being transferred through gross deceit and, above all, young Peter can't get past a 4. In sports and also in English lessons, however, the students are concerned because the teachers are well-disposed towards them. With gymnastics teacher Schmidt you can even do gymnastics to music, while English teacher Dr. Fellner is swarmed by several girls. Young Conny is also secretly in love with Fellner, places flowers for him on the teacher's desk and only has friendship left for Peter, who is in love with her. When Peter has to leave school to earn money for his seriously ill mother, Conny breaks down in tears.

The musicians decide to raise money for Peter. After a short time they receive support from the new "caretaker Max Weber", alias General Director Werneck, whom the students soon only call Uncle Max. Although he is supposed to provide discipline, he organizes opportunities for them to perform as a group. Only the gymnastics teacher Schmidt is otherwise privy to the activities of the students. When the band is playing at a wedding, the morally strict Fraulein Säuberlich also appears there. The next day all rehearsals for the music festival will be canceled and the festival itself will not take place. Dr. Fellner and gymnastics teacher Schmidt, who protectively stand in front of the students who are threatened with collective sitting down, are to be dismissed. Help comes from precocious Vera, who wanted to leave school anyway and takes all the blame on herself. In addition, General Director Werneck has his secretary informed that he insists on holding the festival in any case.

The rehearsals continue and since Werneck secretly gives his friends money for Peter, Peter can pay for his mother's operation. However, because of his 4 in Latin, he cannot apply for a scholarship that would enable him to continue attending school, since students should be able to show a number of ones and twos on their certificate. Werneck realizes that this regulation was introduced by his overzealous and extremely ambitious secretary. At the music festival, at which the school band appears with several titles, Werneck now identifies himself as general director and agrees to a scholarship for Peter, since he has done the school a great service with his work. Conny confesses her love to Peter and the teaching staff praises future improvement for the benefit of the students.

production

The shooting of Wenn die Conny mit dem Peter began in early October in the Berlin-Tempelhof film studios. The film premiered on December 18, 1958 in the Lichtburg in Essen . In 1960 Cornelia Froboess and Peter Kraus shot another hit film together with Conny and Peter Make Music .

In Wenn die Conny mit dem Peter numerous hits can be heard, some of which are sung several times and in duets:

  • Cornelia Froboess and Peter Kraus: I want to dream with you
  • Cornelia Froboess and Peter Kraus: teenage melody
  • Peter Kraus: Sugar baby
  • Cornelia Froboess: Hey, Boys - How Do You Do
  • Cornelia Froboess: The Jolly Joker

Cornelia Froboess was under contract with Electrola at the time of shooting , while Peter Kraus was under contract with Polydor . Since the two record companies could not agree on a joint release of the duets by Froboess and Kraus, the film duets were re-recorded for the record releases. Froboess sang the title with Will Brandes , while Kraus Viennese Micky Main received as a duet partner.

criticism

The lexicon of international film described Wenn the Conny with Peter as the “prototype of those teenage comedies […] with which the German film industry reacted in the 1950s to the new youth culture imported from the USA.” Peter Kraus acts as “honest and good Elvis - Presley - cut ”, while Conny Froboess embodies“ the clean girl next door ”. Above all, the film is "not uninteresting as a contemporary document."

The film sheets called Wenn the Conny and Peter a "rascal glory in the cheerful boarding school".
