action

The gangster Felix Wuntsch, who eight years ago together with his accomplice Fritzsche carried out a successful money robbery with 1.2 million D-Mark loot, was arrested shortly after the crime and has been serving his sentence ever since. His accomplice Fritsche was shot at that time, the prey remained missing. Wuntsch has changed his life in prison for the better, he paints and keeps a hamster, but only has a few weeks to live after his cancer diagnosis. Due to his state of health, Wuntsch could submit a pardon, which has a good chance of success, but prefers to spend the rest of his life in the cell and paint. Inspector Konrad, who worked on the robbery at the time, speaks to the prison director, he hopes that Wuntsch will lead him to the booty after all. Konrad puts Schuckert on Wuntsch, who is supposed to elicit the hiding place of the money for a 5% commission from the Wuntsch insurance company. Konrad also tries again to find out the hiding place directly from Wuntsch, but the latter pretends to be ignorant that his accomplice hid the money without telling him the hiding place. Meanwhile, Commissioner Trimmel in Hamburg has checked Wuntsch's ex-wife, who now lives in the Hanseatic city, but he believes it is impossible that she has the money from the attack.

Wuntsch gives his fellow inmate Theo Klein, who was never keen on his money and will soon be released, a note for his daughter Elke, in return he promises him a share of the booty. Reluctantly, this participates. Meanwhile, Wuntsch leads his cellmate Schuckert astray, because he suspects that he should listen to him. Konrad suspects that Wuntsch is trying to lure him on the wrong track, but lets follow the trail anyway. In the meantime, Theo, who has just been released, has to discover that a weekend cottage has now been built at the place Wuntsch had given him as the hiding place for the money, while the officers are following the wrong lead. When Konrad visits Wuntsch again, the latter indicates that he has set the police up, Konrad suggests that his daughter should get the insurance premium if Wuntsch reveals the hiding place of the money, but Wuntsch does not accept it and gives himself up clueless. Theo poses as a prospective buyer of the weekend cottage to get information about the owner and the builder. He learns that the building contractor Nicklisch had built the houses, he was on the verge of bankruptcy and quickly made money after building the weekend houses. Jörg, who works in the prison laundry, receives a tip from one of the prisoners that Elke Wuntsch knows where the money is. He goes to the gangster Grassitsch and makes a deal with him that he will collect the money, from then on Elke is shadowed by gangsters and finally kidnapped.

Meanwhile, Klein goes to Nicklisch, but is brutally sent away by him without being able to present his request. Klein calls Nicklisch anonymously and demands "back" the money that made Nicklisch suddenly rich. Nicklisch gets involved in a meeting. Elke, who has meanwhile been released, visits her father and explains to him that he urgently needs to tell Jörg from the prison laundry where the money is, otherwise the gangsters would kill her. He advises her to go away for a few days. Klein goes to Nicklisch and demands the 1.2 million from him, Nicklisch offers him 100,000 DM, and Klein agrees. When Klein left, Nicklisch talks about the case with his son Hans. He asks his father why he is willing to pay money that he doesn't have. Nicklisch explains to his son that he knows that Klein is talking about money from a robbery eight years ago and that he can now get the money that he had not found. Nicklisch had found his fortune in another way. Konrad's assistant Rolf goes to Wuntsch's cell, who demands police protection for his daughter. Wuntsch still does not reveal the hiding place of the money, but reveals the whereabouts of his daughter to the police. Nicklisch buys back the vacant weekend house to get the money, while Elke receives police protection. She can identify Grassitsch as one of the gangsters who threatened her. She tells the police that the man who was supposed to find out where the money was hiding was called Jörg. The name Theo also said something to her, the gangsters said in their presence that Theo would "be surprised".

Meanwhile, Grassitsch also shows up at the holiday home with a henchman. Independently of him, Theo observes Nicklisch and his son on site as they turn up there to look for the money. However, since the two of them cannot open the house, they go back to get the key. After the two have left, Theo enters the hut, who pretended to be a prospective buyer and therefore received the key. Theo is observed by Grassitsch and his people. When Theo came out of the house after a short time, he was followed by Grassitsch and his men, but was able to shake them off after he noticed his pursuers. Konrad and his assistant Rolf Theo's life partner Elli, who says that another man has already asked about Theo, Theo would not have stayed with her out of fear. She continues to tell Konrad that Theo wanted to borrow DM 4,000 from her and had promised her ten times the sum for it. Konrad publishes a manhunt for Theo and Grassitsch. Meanwhile, Nicklisch and his son gain entry to the house by breaking open the door. Grassitsch and his people watch the little house to which Theo also returns. While Nicklisch and his son spend the night inside, both Theo and Grassitsch keep an eye on the house.

The next morning, the neighbor discovers Theo's mug shot in the newspaper and remembers that he had asked him about the neighboring house. He goes to the police and reports to Konrad about his observation. Konrad also learns that a deposit of DM 4,000 is sufficient for the weekend cottage, the amount Theo von Elli wanted to borrow. Meanwhile, the Nicklischs are digging for the money in the house when they notice Theo in front of the house. Theo enters and threatens them with a gun, he announces to stay nearby. Hans gets nervous, but his father orders him to keep going. Konrad and Rolf arrive at the weekend settlement and order reinforcements. Meanwhile, Grassitsch and his people are approaching the house, believing Nicklisch and his son have found the money. They attack the Nicklischs when they come out with a suitcase, but the suitcase only contains tools. At that moment, Konrad and other officers arrive and arrest Grassitsch and his henchmen. Konrad shows the Nicklischs a photo of Theo Klein, but they pretend to have never seen him. Konrad suspects that the money is no longer in the house, but that someone already has it. After the officers have left the house, Theo approaches the house, he has observed how the Nicklischs had hidden the money in the rubble and is digging it up there. Konrad and Rolf, who were hiding near the house, confront Theo after he had just dug up some of the money. Theo protests that he did not take the money for himself.

At this moment the Nicklischs come back, Konrad hides in the bushes with Klein. The Nicklischs hastily start digging up the money, as they now believe they have reached their destination. When they put the money in a sack, Konrad comes out and confiscates the money. Nicklisch tries to talk his way out of it, but Konrad also takes him and his son to the station. The next day, Konrad ponders that Theo, who was persuaded by Felix Wuntsch, is going to prison again, while this is not safe with the Nicklischs. He goes to Felix's prison again. This is doing a little better again. Konrad asks him why he didn't tell him where he was hiding. Felix says that this wasn't directed against Konrad, he just wanted to finish the matter. The two say goodbye, whether they will see each other again is uncertain as Felix is about to die.
