Gunther Beth (born October 18, 1945 in Lübeck ) is a German actor , director and author .

Life

Education and theater

Beth grew up in Hamburg and attended the grammar school for boys in Eppendorf (today grammar school Eppendorf). Under Beth's direction Das Periskop , the school newspaper there , was awarded the Peter Zenger Prize as the best Hamburg school newspaper in 1964. After graduating from high school , he decided to pursue a professional career as an actor. Beth played in almost all major tabloid theaters , including Berlin , Munich , Cologne and Düsseldorf . Beth also had a theater engagement at Walter Ullrich's Small Theater in the Park in Bad Godesberg . In 1972 he played at the Hebbel-Theater in Berlin under the direction of Wolfgang Spier in the comedy Everyone speaks of love by Hans Borgelt ; his partners were Günter Pfitzmann , Maria Körber and Peter Schiff . The production was also recorded for television . In 1984 he appeared, again under the direction of Wolfgang Spier, in the comedy on Kurfürstendamm in the comedy Write If You Can! by Peter Lambda . This production, in which, in addition to Beth, Wolfgang Spier, Hannelore Cremer and Christine Schild played, was also recorded for television. In 1985, Beth went on tour with this piece . In January 1986 he made a guest appearance with Schreib, if you can! in the Contra-Kreis-Theater in Bonn . Even later, Beth was seen regularly in touring productions, mostly in her own plays, as an actor; several times he directed it himself.

Playwright

Since the 1970s, Beth wrote and co-wrote several plays . He wrote his first play, the comedy My mother does not do that, together with the actor and director Folker Bohnet . The premiere took place in 1977 in the Cologne Theater am Dom . In December 1986, his comedy Der Neurosen-Kavalier, written together with Alan Cooper , was premiered in Stuttgart . The main roles were played by Claus Biederstaedt (as Felix Bollmann, the neurosis cavalier), Karin Dor (as Sybille Bast, the kleptomaniac widow) and Angélique Duvier (as the bestselling author Claudia Carrera); Beth herself took on the role of the enamored neurologist De Witt. With this piece Beth went with the premiere cast several times (1987, 1989, 1990, 2003-2008) on Germany tour, most recently in 2008. In 2009 the piece had already been shown in over 7,500 performances, in 88 productions and in 9 countries. The play has meanwhile (as of December 2014) been performed in over 9,000 performances in 112 productions in 13 countries. The Italian television RAI and ORF have recorded productions from Milan (1994) and Vienna (2001) for television. ARD filmed the play under the title Ach du Fröhliche (with a script by Gunther Beth) with Harald Juhnke in the lead role (1995).

In 2006/2007 Beth performed with Der Neurosen-Kavalier at the Contra-Kreis-Theater in Bonn.

Beth wrote other tabloid pieces in collaboration with actress and author Barbara Capell . It was created together: Mickey Mouse and Einstein (first performance 1985 Comedy on Kurfürstendamm with Ute Willing and Herbert Herrmann ), don't trust anyone over 60! (WP 1992), Wer den Löwen Awakens (WP 1998), I would like to be like you (WP 2000), You only love three times or The Cat (WP February 4, 2001, Theater im Rathaus Essen ) and Willkommen im Club (WP 2002).

In his comedy Wer den Löwen wake up , the focus of which is an aging owner of an artist agency, Beth embodied the role of Hannes, the partner of the artist agent Leo Copperschmidt. Beth also went on tour with this piece in 2000. The piece was played at the Komödie am Kurfürstendamm, among others; his partners in the production of the touring theater Thespiskarren were Claus Biederstaedt, Ricci Hohlt and Jessica Blume .

In Do not trust anyone over 60! , a comedy about the aging bookseller Robert Schweizer, who wants to fall in love again but gets into an argument with his son, Beth took on the role of son Tom Schweizer. Again Claus Biederstaedt and Karin Dor played the main roles; in later performances Ilja Richter and Peter Fröhlich took on the role of Robert Schweizer. In his own play Man Loves Only Three Times or The Cat , Beth also played the role of Hagen at the side of Karin Dor and Stefan Behrens . Beth had written the role of Isabella especially for Karin Dor. Beth also toured with this production several times, most recently in 2010. From August to November 2008, a series of performances by the touring theater Thespiskarren took place at the Komödie im Bayerischer Hof in Munich.

In 2007, Beth's comedy Die Nummer des Jahres , which was created in collaboration with René Heinersdorff , premiered at the Theater an der Kö in Düsseldorf . In 2007/2008 Beth performed his piece Trau nobody over 60! again at the Contra-Kreis-Theater. He himself played the role of son Tom again; this time his partners were Karin Dor and Peter Fröhlich. In February 2009 there followed the world premiere of his play The Costume , which was followed by a tour in 2010/2011.

In 1981 Beth's novel The Ice Cream of Eternal Friendship was published by Langen Müller Verlag . In addition to his plays, Beth also wrote scripts , including for the series Marienhof and Das Traumschiff .

Movie and TV

From the late 1960s, Beth also regularly took on film and television roles. In 1969 he was seen in the cinema in the crime film Seven Days Deadline by Alfred Vohrer as a thwarted student Hensen. In the comedic sex film Fresh, Pious, Happy, Free (1970) by Rolf Thiele , he played Alexander. He also played the role of Kronert in 1973 (premiere: 1974) in the thriller One of Us Two by Wolfgang Petersen . In the Italian anti-war film The Night of San Lorenzo (1982) by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani , Beth played the liberator as an "American soldier".

Beth was seen in various crime series on television: Hamburg Transit , Der Kommissar and Derrick . In the Kommissar episode Schrei vor dem Fenster he played Berthold Thiemel, the son of an actress ( Maria Schell ), who is suspected of having shot her husband. In 1972/1973 he was seen in the family series Kleinstadtbahnhof alongside Heidi Kabel and Gustav Knuth . He played the role of the son Wolfgang Henning, who gave up his medical studies in Hamburg and returned to his hometown. In the television series Die Powenzbande (1973) he had the role of Edwin Quiebus. He embodied the son of the highly moral and strict widow Quiebus, who falls in love with the pretty Lilith Powenz and finally marries her. In the crime scene episode The Bill is Submitted in 1975 he was seen as a police assistant Rolf.

Dubbing and speaking work

Beth also worked as a voice actor. He voiced his voice to David Garrison on A Terribly Kind Family . He also spoke to Robert Walker Jr. in spaceship Enterprise . He also voiced the role of John David Garfield in Robert Altman's film That Cold Day in the Park .

Beth also worked as a speaker for radio plays . He was engaged several times as a speaker in the Karl May radio plays on the Europa label . He spoke Ironheart in Under Vultures , Wohkadeh in The Bear Hunter's Son, and Mesuf in The Slave Caravan . In 1979 he worked in a co-production by Südwestfunk and Westdeutscher Rundfunk in the radio play Das Ekel aus Säffle from the Kommissar Beck crime series. Beth also emerged as a reciter .

Personal

Beth originally wanted to become a professional tennis player . Since 2004 he has been reporting on the tennis championships in Wimbledon for the Munich evening newspaper . Beth is married to the actress and author Barbara Capell and lives in Munich.
