Gustav Knuth

Gustav Adolf Karl Friedrich Knuth (born July 7, 1901 in Braunschweig , † February 1, 1987 in Küsnacht , Switzerland ) was a German actor . After the Second World War he took Swiss citizenship .

Life

Pushed by his father into an apprenticeship as a locksmith, he broke off this training and took acting lessons with the actor Casimir Paris in Braunschweig. He received his first engagement in Hildesheim in 1918 . The Harburg City Theater followed from 1919 to 1922 . Between 1922 and 1925 he played in Basel ; from 1933 to 1936 he worked at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg . From there he was committed to the Prussian State Theater in Berlin , where he stayed until 1945.

Between 1945 and 1949 Knuth u. a. active again at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg. In 1946 the British occupying power appointed him to serve as a representative of the cultural sector in the Appointed Citizenship of Hamburg . In the first elections for citizenship in the same year, he ran as the top candidate of the Free Cultural Political Federation , but was unsuccessful and did not move into parliament.

From 1949 he belonged to the ensemble of the Schauspielhaus Zürich . There he played with Therese Giehse, among others .

Friedrich Dürrenmatt wrote the role of the scientist Beutler in his play Die Physiker for Knuth . This play was staged for television in 1964 by Fritz Umgelter with Knuth and Giehse in the roles specially written for them . He was also seen in the Sissi trilogy as Duke Max in Bavaria at the side of Romy and Magda Schneider .

Since 1935 Knuth has also been in front of the film camera. He described the film Unter den Brücken , made in 1944 but not shown until 1946 and directed by Helmut Käutner, as his best film . With the success of television in the 1960s, Knuth opened up to a larger audience. In the role of the veterinarian Dr. Hofer in the series All My Animals , he quickly played himself into the hearts of his audience. During the 1960s and 1970s he was one of the most prominent German TV actors and played popular, good-natured characters in numerous films and series.

Gustav Knuth had another television success in 1967/68 with the family series Großer Mann what next ? In the popular circus series Salto Mortale he played the head of the artist family. The 26-part family series Drüben bei Lehmanns from 1971 was also very well received. In 1979, Knuth appeared as Eiserner Gustav in the multi-part series of the same name, directed by Wolfgang Staudte . He played his last film role in 1981 in Der Bockerer .

He was also active as a radio play speaker from time to time . In 1953 he had one of the leading roles in the third Paul Temple multi-part series Paul Temple and the Vandyke case by Francis Durbridge under the direction of Eduard Hermann as Philip Droste .

Gustav Knuth was married to Gustl Busch ; their son Klaus Knuth (1935–2012) also became an actor. The marriage ended in divorce in the 1930s. Knuth then married his colleague Elisabeth Lennartz . His granddaughter is the actress Nicole Knuth, who was awarded the Salzburg Bull in 2011 as one half of the stage duo Knuth and Tucek .

In 1974 Knuth published his memoir With a Smile in the Buttonhole . He died of a heart attack in 1987 at the age of 85 . His final resting place is in the Hinterriet / Küsnacht cemetery near Zurich.

Awards

Gustav Knuth was appointed state actor in 1935 . He was awarded the Ernst Lubitsch Prize in 1962 for his performance in Der Lügner . In 1967, 1968 and 1980 Knuth received a Golden, and in 1970 a Silver Bambi , in 1976 he received the Golden Camera as a talk show host for the SFB artist regulars table . For his many years of outstanding work in German film, he was honored with the gold film band in 1974 .
