Paul von Schönthan , actually: Paul Schönthan Edler von Pernwaldt , (born March 19, 1853 in Vienna ; † August 4, 1905 there ) was an Austrian journalist and playwright.

Life

Schönthan came from an old merchant family; his older brother was the writer Franz von Schönthan (1849-1913), with whom he also formed a fraternal duo of authors . At the request of his family he went - like his brother - as a cadet in the Imperial and Royal Navy . But after a short time he left her for health reasons. Schönthan became a journalist under the guidance of his brother.

Between 1887 and 1890 he worked as an editor of the Berlin weekly newspaper Funny Leaves , where he a. a. worked with his brother and the writer Alexander Moszkowski . In 1892 Schönthan returned to Vienna and got a job with the Wiener Tagblatt . After a short time there he advanced to head of the features section and the art and Hofburgtheater section. On July 1, 1902, he switched to the Wiener Zeitung , where he worked in various departments until his death and where he made his last major contribution on April 12, 1905.

In the last years of his life, Schönthan lived withdrawn in Vienna-Landstrasse , Ölzeltgasse 3. Suffering from nerves, he briefly sought improvement by staying with relatives in Mödling , but then went to Svetlin ’s private sanatorium for the mentally ill , where he spent two and a half months Stayed at the age of 52, died of a brain edema . He found his final resting place in an honorary grave in the Dornbacher Friedhof (group 6, number 4) in Vienna.

As a writer, Schönthan had his greatest success, which is still effective today, in 1885 with the comedy The Rape of the Sabine Women, written together with his brother Franz .

In 1961, in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district), Schönthanplatz was named after him and his brother Franz von Schönthan.
