It was created on a mountain slope, the Alsegg, and borders the Hernalser Friedhof . The cemetery is bordered in the south by Alszeile and in the east by Grünbeckweg. In the north and west there are residential areas and an allotment garden in the immediate vicinity. The cemetery covers an area of 44,047 square meters and is home to 4,778 grave sites.

history

The deceased of the Dornbach parish, which was founded in 1251, were originally buried next to the Dornbach parish church on a walled property. Although the cemetery was not certified to be closed in 1784 due to the low number of deaths, the cemetery was closed in 1814. In place of the old cemetery near the church, outside the village in the corridor "Untere Wieden", in the area where it is today Braungasse and Oberwiedenstrasse, a new cemetery laid out. After an extension in 1871, the new cemetery was also closed in 1883, as the increasing development of the area raised sanitary concerns. The dissolution of the cemetery was approved at the end of 1903, and the exhumed remains were buried in the new Dornbach cemetery.

The cemetery that exists today was laid out in 1883 and opened on July 26, 1883. The facility was intended for “those who confess any denomination and those who do not belong to a denomination”. In 1897 the cemetery was expanded by 1,591 square meters, and in 1902 the area was enlarged again. The extension of the grave digger's house was approved in September 1902, in 1909 a waiting hall was built and the morgue was adapted. An expansion of the facility was planned as early as 1915, but it was not approved to a limited extent until 1918. In 1919 the cemetery was enlarged by around 4,000 square meters, using four parcels owned by the municipality. In 1930, additional areas were purchased for future expansion of the cemetery, and in 1939 the cemetery administration also built an urn laying out.

After repair work after the Second World War, a consecration altar was erected in the mortuary in 1950. The expansion of the area, which had already been considered in the 1930s, took place in 1952 and 1954. In 1957 another plot of land measuring over 6,000 square meters was purchased and in 1964 included in the cemetery. Another cemetery expansion was implemented in 1967. In 1975, 1977 and 1978/79, the cemetery administration also created new groups of graves.

The mortuary of the Dornbacher Friedhof was adapted between 1966 and 1968 according to plans by the architect Josef Strelec and was carried out according to plans by the architect Erich Boltenstern . The building has a thick concrete glass window with a glass mosaic by the painter Hermann Bauch , who also designed the front of the apse.
