Domenico Artaria (born November 20, 1775 in Blevio on Lake Como , † July 5, 1842 in Vienna ) was a major music publisher , music dealer and collector in Vienna. His cousin of the same name (1765–1823) was an art publisher in Mannheim .

Life

Domenico was the son of Francesco Artaria (1744–1808), who had co-founded the parent company in Vienna, and Angiola nee. Caronti († 1818). Domenico became a partner in the Viennese company Artaria as his father's successor . In 1801 he started his own partnership with the music publisher “T. Mollo & Co. ”from Tranquillo Mollo and in 1802 sold his shares to T. Mollo.

After he had acquired the shares of his future father-in-law Carlo Artaria (1747-1808) in 1802 and two years later also replaced the partnership with Mollo, Domenico Artaria was the sole owner of the Viennese parent company on Kohlmarkt in 1804 (since 1789 in today's No. 9 ), which was one of the leading European music publishers at the time. He published works by Franz Schubert , among others . He entered into partnerships with Pietro Cappi (1804–1816) and Carlo Boldrini (1810–1824). In 1805 Beethoven lost a lawsuit after lengthy disputes over the string quintet in C major, Op. 29 , whereupon he largely ended his connection with Artaria.

Artaria's collection of original master manuscripts with works by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and more than 80 autographs by Beethoven became famous . The collection came to the Royal Prussian State Library in Berlin via Bonn (1897) in 1901 .

Artaria was buried in the Dornbacher Friedhof in Vienna-Hernals .
