Domenico Artari (1815)

Domenico Artaria (* 22. May 1765 in Blevio on Lake Como ; † 2. January 1823 in Mannheim ) was an important art dealer and -verleger in Palatine , later Baden Mannheim. His cousin of the same name (1775–1842) was a music publisher in Vienna .

Life

Domenico was the son of Giovanni Casimiro Artaria (1725–1797), who had co-founded the Mainz parent company, and who was born Angela. Bosmani. After the death of his older brother Pasquale (1755–1785) Domenico Artaria became a partner in the Viennese company Artaria . From 1790 he was also a manager with his brother Giovanni Maria in the Mainz headquarters. He expanded this with a map and music department.

The French occupation and the Mainz Republic were the reason for the relocation of the company to Mannheim in the Electoral Palatinate in 1793. At the same time Artaria ended its partnership in Vienna. Since he had married the daughter of the Mannheim bookseller Matthieu Fontaine in 1791, he was able to unite his company with that of his father-in-law. In the Grand Duchy of Baden, it has operated as an art and publishing bookstore Artaria & Fontaine since 1819 . Among his five sons, who were at least temporarily involved in the company, the company became known throughout Europe for its excellent copperplate engravings . The company existed as a publishing bookstore until 1867.
