Mathias Artaria
Mathias Artaria (born June 19, 1814 in Mannheim , Grand Duchy of Baden ; † February 3, 1885 ibid) was a German history and genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .
Life
Artaria was a grandson of the Mannheim art publisher Domenico Artaria . After completing a commercial apprenticeship, he enrolled at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1835 to study painting. There he attended the painting class of Karl Ferdinand Sohn until 1837/1838 and also learned from Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow . During this time he established friendly relationships with Andreas Achenbach . Even Wilhelm Trautschold belonged to his circle of friends. Artaria went on study trips to Paris and other foreign cities with important galleries, to Tyrol and Spain . In 1863, an eye disease forced him to give up painting.
