Julius Meinl I (born April 10, 1824 in Graslitz , Bohemia , † December 24, 1914 in Vienna ) was an Austrian businessman and founder of the wholesale company Julius Meinl AG.

Life

Julius Meinl was born the son of master baker Franz Anton Meinl (1789–1867) and his wife Anna, née Dotzauer, in house no. 603 in Graslitz and was baptized on April 12, 1824 as a Catholic. His Meinl grandfather was also a master baker in Graslitz.

He completed an apprenticeship in an uncle's dye store in Prague . In 1862 he opened a delicatessen shop on the Viennese meat market , where he also sold “freshly brewed coffee every day”. 14 years later he was insolvent. With his own blends, he successfully specialized in the coffee trade and discovered a source of income in commercial coffee roasting in 1877 and opened the first roasting factory in 1891.

In February 1913 he left the company and handed over a network of branches to his son Julius Meinl II that extended across the entire Austro-Hungarian monarchy . Julius Meinl died after a short illness at the age of 91 on the morning of December 24, 1914. After being laid out in St. Stephen's Cathedral , he was buried in the family crypt in the Dornbach cemetery . In addition to his homonymous son, he left behind the married daughter Anna Floderer and several grandchildren.
