The Schrammel music is one for Vienna typical music genre of the late 19th century . It is considered Viennese folk music .

It was named after the Viennese musicians, violinists and composers Johann and Josef Schrammel . In 1878 they founded a small ensemble in Vienna with the guitarist Anton Strohmayer , with which they performed a folk repertoire with songs and marches, dances and waltzes in wine taverns and restaurants.

Since the father of the famous Schrammel brothers, Kaspar Schrammel , was born and raised in Litschau , the northernmost city in Austria is known as Schrammelstadt. Litschau is the cradle of the famous Viennese Heurigen and dance music. Every year at Litschauer Herrensee there is the Schrammel.Klang.Festival , the “Woodstock des Wienerlied”.

After the clarinetist Georg Dänzer joined the orchestra in 1884, they called themselves the “Specialitäten Quartet Gebrüder Schrammel” and quickly became famous for their way of playing Viennese songs . They now also played in the palaces and salons of the Viennese aristocracy and the upper classes . The "Schrammeleuphoria" also joined greats like Johann Strauss and Johannes Brahms as admirers . Arnold Schönberg would later also rave about the Schrammel music. The Wienerlied was already known as "Schrammelmusik" during the brothers' lifetime.

The Schrammelmusik is mainly characterized by the "crying" (grumbling), melancholy, but nevertheless chanson-like lively instrumentation.

Typical line -ups are: two violins, double guitar , clarinet (mostly G clarinet, also called “picksüßes Hölzl”), later also button harmonica ( Schrammel harmonica ).

In seven years the Schrammel brothers composed over 200 songs and pieces of music; with these they set a high point for Viennese music. The brothers died before their father in 1893 and 1895, both aged 43.
