history
Old cemeteries in Hernals
The first Hernals cemetery was originally around the Kalvarienbergkirche . In the course of the Josephine reforms , the cemetery was abandoned in 1784. The original use as a cemetery emerged in 1894 when bones were found during the regulation of the church square.
As a replacement for the cemetery around the parish church, a new cemetery was created on a field "against Ottakring ". The cemetery in the area of today's Lorenz-Bayer-Platz was expanded around 1830. There was also a separate cholera cemetery . The actual cemetery was closed on November 1, 1872 and subsequently turned into a park. The entrance to the cemetery was originally at the point where Haslingergasse joins the square. The morgue was adapted into a gardener's house of the city garden administration.
The establishment of the new cemetery
Hernals had the cemetery that still exists today built on a hill that was previously used for viticulture. The construction took place between 1870 and 1872 according to plans by the city architect Johann Pflaum . The cemetery was consecrated on October 25, 1872, and the first burial took place on November 2, 1872. The monument to the Imperial and Royal Field Marshal Graf von Clerfait , originally located on the Kalvarienberg, was relocated to the cemetery in 1883 by the Hernals municipal council.
Cemetery expansions
In 1891, the cemetery covered 49,080 square meters, of which 5,580 square meters were used by the gravedigger to operate the gardening business. As early as 1894, the cemetery was expanded to include three community-owned plots of 7,527 square meters in the east. At the same time, there were considerations not to expand in the future, as the cemetery was increasingly surrounded by residential areas and a new relocation of the cemetery was being considered. Nevertheless, the cemetery was enlarged by 22,000 square meters in 1898 by adding municipal land and in 1899 by purchasing parcels. In 1902 the municipality of Vienna decided to further expand the cemetery area and approved the purchase of 13,635 square meters of land. In addition, it was decided in the same year to build a new grave digger's house and two death chambers. In 1905 the cemetery had already increased its area to 97,291 square meters. Occupancy had already risen in the early 20th century so that in 1911 the grave fee for unassigned persons, i.e. deceased who had not lived in the former suburb of Hernals, was increased to four times the normal fee. To counteract the lack of space, the community expanded the cemetery again in 1912 by around 8,500 square meters to the west, in 1915 by 14,000 square meters and in 1917 by a further 12,000 square meters. In 1930 the local council approved a further expansion.
The cemetery after World War II
Between 1945 and 1951, the cemetery administration had the funeral hall and administration building renovated and the damaged fencing replaced. In addition, new fences were built. The arcades damaged by the war were also renovated, the destroyed right arcades rebuilt. In 1960, 1964 and 1967/68 the cemetery was expanded again, an urn grove was laid out between 1961 and 1962 on an area of 2,500 square meters. The burial rooms were redesigned by the cemetery administration between 1978 and 1979; a general renovation of all buildings was necessary between 2004 and 2006.
building
The funeral hall was built from 1870 to 1872 according to plans by Johann Pflaum using a neo-Gothic exposed brick construction. The main front of the funeral hall is flanked by staggered, gabled administration buildings. The funeral hall has a basilical elevation in the form of a reliquary above a cross-shaped floor plan. The building is equipped with pointed arch portals and windows and has dimensional fields between the nerdy pillars, which were equipped with rich stone pinnacles between the balustrades. The central sloping gable is decorated with a tracery rosette. On the back there is a relief showing Christ in glory between Moses and Saint John the Evangelist . The interior of the funeral hall consists of a three-aisled, three-bay pillar hall in neo-Gothic design. The transverse axis is enlarged by three yokes on both sides. The interior of the funeral hall was redesigned between 1978 and 1979 according to plans by the architect Erich Boltenstern . From 1979 onwards it was possible to hold cremation celebrations. The winged altars were created by Hans Robert Pippal , the leaded glass windows and the leaded glazing of the entrance gates were made by Hermann Bauch .
Following the funeral hall, neo-Gothic crypt arcades were built up the slope at right angles. The arcades are also made of exposed brick and mainly house stelae or obelisk graves . In some cases, classical and early historical tombs from the old Hernals cemetery were still used.
