Wolfgang Pollak

Wolfgang Pollak (born November 28, 1915 in Mürzzuschlag ; † January 9, 1995 in Vienna ) was an Austrian linguist and university professor .

Life

During the time of National Socialism , as the son of a Jewish father (Adolf Pollak, a brother of Joseph Delmont ), he was refused to take the teaching examination for racist reasons.After his dismissal as a half-Jew from the Wehrmacht , he was granted a doctorate as a Dr. . phil. allowed with Dietrich Kralik . He completed his studies with a doctorate in German and Romance studies .

In the school year 1947/1948 he taught German and French at the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna . 1958 took place the habilitation with Johann Sofer for Romance philology (linguistic direction) at the University of Vienna. He subsequently led proseminars , and in 1961 a scientific training course at the University of Bucharest. From 1963 to 1970 he was Professor of Romance Studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and from 1970 to his retirement in 1985 he took over a chair in Romance studies at the University of Vienna .

Pollak was temporarily chairman of the university professors' section in the Association of Social Democratic Academics (BSA). From 1970 to 1973 he was chairman of the Association of Austrian New Philologists . From 1987 to 1995 he was President of the Austrian Society for Semiotics (ÖGS).

On January 19, 1995, he was buried in the Hernals cemetery . His wife Mag. Michèle Pollak, who repeatedly supported him - both as a competent linguist and as a native French speaker - taught at the Institute for Romance Studies and retired in 2008.
