Kurt Preger

Kurt Preger (* 1907 in Berlin ; † October 12, 1960 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer ( tenor , baritone ) who later also took on some tasks in the field of bass baritone. He celebrated great success as a teenage hero tenor and operetta singer.

Life

Preger, son of the director of the Vienna Carl-Theater Miksa Preger , started in 1931 at the Vienna Volksoper as "Prince Paul" in Grand Duchess von Gerolstein . He played at the Deutsches Theater in Brno in 1933, at the Deutsches Theater in Prague and then again at the Vienna Volksoper and at the Basel City Theater from 1938 to 1946.

As a persecuted Jew, Preger traveled through the Netherlands and Belgium with the Franz Hirsch operetta group during the reign of National Socialism . When the German troops marched in, he hid in the Netherlands. After fleeing to Switzerland, he played again in Basel as well as in St. Gallen , Zurich , Bern and Lucerne . In 1948 he returned to the Vienna Volksoper and worked there until his death, mainly in the buffo class and as an operetta singer. At times he sang at the Vienna State Opera .

Kurt Preger was married to the Austrian opera and operetta singer Sonja Mottl , a soprano of Yugoslav origin, until his death .

He found his final resting place in the Hernalser Friedhof in Vienna (group F, number 53 A).
