Rudolf Grill

Rudolf Grill (born August 18, 1910 in Dürrnberg near Hallein, † September 20, 1987 in Vienna ) was an Austrian geologist (especially petroleum geology ), micro- paleontologist and tertiary stratigraph .

Life

Grill was the son of a grader in salt mining and attended high school in Linz (Matura 1929 with distinction). He studied natural sciences with a focus on geology in Vienna and passed the teaching examination (physics, natural history). Among his teachers were Franz Eduard Suess , Othenio Abel and Kurt Ehrenberg . It was in 1935 at the University of Vienna Dr. phil. doctoral thesis on the Gallneukirchen tertiary basin near Linz. The faunal differentiation made in it (in macrofossils and especially in micropalaeontology) from Miocene to Oligocene was later important for petroleum geology. First he worked from 1933 as a petroleum geologist at Eurogasco, a subsidiary of Standard Oil, in natural gas exploration in the Vienna Basin and in northern Italy. From 1937 to 1939 he worked for the newly founded Rohoel -gewinnungs-AG in the Vienna Basin. From 1939 he was employed at the Federal Geological Institute in Vienna (then Reich Office for Soil Research). There he last held the post of chief geologist. He retired in 1975 and was councilor. He was buried at the Hernals cemetery .

During his time at the Federal Agency, he worked on many oil and gas wells under stratigraphic aspects and mapped a lot in the Vienna Basin. From 1951 to 1967 he was Secretary General of the Austrian National Committee for the World Oil Congresses and he was an advisor to the Supreme Mining Authority in Vienna. From 1950 to 1976 he wrote regularly for The Micropalaeontologist .

Grill received the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
