Erich Thenius

Erich Thenius (born December 26, 1924 in Opatija , Istria , Croatia ) is an Austrian paleontologist .

Life

Erich Thenius spent his school days in Baden near Vienna . In 1940 he began to write for the popular science magazine Kosmos . After graduating from high school in 1942, he studied zoology , geology and paleontology at the University of Vienna and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. In 1951 he became a substitute professor and in 1957 professor of paleobiology and paleontology at the University of Vienna. In 1962 he became professor of mammalian paleontology and deputy director of the Institute for Paleobiology at the University of Vienna.

His main focus was the study of the fauna of the Tertiary and Ice Age . In over 300 publications, including 30 books, he dealt not only with the evolution of mammals, but also with fossils and geology in Lower Austria .

In 1961 he became a corresponding member of the mathematical and natural science class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and in 1979 an honorary member of this class. From 1966 to 1969 he was President of the Austrian Paleontological Society . In 1983 he became a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences in Zagreb . In 1987 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle . In 1992 he became an honorary member of the Paleontological Society . In 1995 Thenius donated a scholarship for particularly outstanding doctoral theses by Austrian paleontologists.
