Heinrich Küpper
Heinrich Karl Eduard Anton Küpper (born February 10, 1904 in Prague ; † February 23, 2000 ) was an Austrian geologist .
Küpper's father Karl Heinrich Küpper was a councilor in the Ministry of Social Administration in Prague. He graduated from high school in Vienna and then studied geology and mineralogy at the university with Franz Eduard Suess , Carl Diener and Friedrich Becke, among others . In 1926 he received his doctorate ( The Carbon of the Carnic Alps ). He then briefly worked as an assistant at the Vienna University of Technology before moving to Bataafsche Petroleum Matschaapji in 1927 (part of the Royal Dutch Shell ). He initially worked for them as a field geologist in Sumatra, was in Northern Germany in 1931/32 and in The Hague in 1933/34 and then again in Indonesia, where he became district and chief geologist and led exploration work in Borneo and Sumatra, among others. Among other things, he found large oil deposits in Borneo in 1938. After the German occupation of the Netherlands, he was interned at first, but was released again and worked for the geological service in Bandung until the Japanese occupation in 1942 . During the Japanese occupation he was interned again in 1942/43. After the liberation he stayed in Bandung, where he did paleontological studies. In 1947 he was back in Vienna, where he was hired as chief geologist at the Federal Geological Institute in 1948 . In 1950 he took over the management and was officially director in 1952. In 1969 he retired.
At the Federal Geological Institute, he initially mapped the Limestone Alps and the Tertiary of the Vienna Basin and was in charge of hydrogeology (in particular, he was concerned with Vienna's water supply).
He was president of the Austrian Geological Society and founder and president of the Austrian Society for Petroleum Sciences. He was an honorary member of the Hungarian Geological Society. In 1969 he received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class and in 1975 the Great Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna.
He had been married since 1927 and had four children.
